Is Bush's panty fetish related to his alcoholism?
Let's be frank. The policy of abusing detainees by putting ladies underwear on their heads reeks of Bush. It's his brainchild as sure as he shirked his National Guard duty because he feared taking a drug test. But what's behind it? What made him think that it would be an effective way of getting people to talk?

I suspect that Bush's obsession with prancing around with women's knickers on his head is no ordinary fetish, and has less to do with humiliation than with the physiology of the brain. It's a wellknown fact that chronic alcoholics like Bush may suffer from "confusion, confabulations, apathy, and amnesia," aka Korsakoff's Syndrome. One curious feature of patients suffering from Korsakoff's Syndrome is that despite severe memory impairment overall, they tend to retain a functioning olfactory memory system.

See how it fits together? Imagine Bush as college cheerleader and fraternity pledge. Once or twice a semester he's forced to use his brain to remember things. Addled by years of heavy drinking, and unable to benefit from his normal regime of illegal stimulants, Bush, a much smarter man than his detractors give him credit for, turns to the only bit of brain he knows he can count on. He begins sniffing panties as mnemonic aid to help him pass (barely) his exams.

This hypothesis doesn't exclude the possibility that Bush derives onanistic pleasure or psychic relief from wearing women's underwear on his head. I merely offer it as one possible explanation for the origination of the famous Bush panty torture doctrine. Perhaps it really isn't intended as senseless humiliation, but instead is meant to help detainees remember things.

Something to think about, anyway.

1. It has something to do with his mother
...but I don't like to think too much about it beyond that.
:scared:

Nice post. I, for one, am fascinated (in a sick, rubbernecking way) by the bizarre psychological workings of The Family.

3. I doubt Bush micromanaged the torture at Abu Ghraib
I'm pretty sure he approved it, though.

From what we know of the character, I imagine he thoroughly enjoyed the pictures.

Don't mean to undermine the thoughtful nature of your post, which I understand -- just thought the title was priceless!

6. Bush wants to be a woman - seriously
Bush has a panty thing going on for the same reason many male British comics wear drag - they wish to be women.

British men, like Bush, were in the shadow of brave, accomplished fathers. They expectations upon them were immense. In their minds, the demands on women were far less objectionable - at least they didn't have to go out and fight for the empire (Bush's fighting being political, of course, and on behalf of the family empire). So why not take a break for a while and enjoy the pleasure of being women - if only for a moment.

8. Wouldn't rule it out. Just saying, if you want to take the high road
and make the best possible case for the Bush panty abuse doctrine, you might want to consider Korsakoff's Syndrome.

10. Bush pranced around with panties beneath his dress
and the alcoholic cokehead sniffed his own panties after wearing them. Why NO ONE in the media ever brings up Bush's crossdressing fetish while he was in High School is amazing to me.

http://www.nytimes.com/library/politics/camp/061000wh-bush.html

From the above linked New York Times article:

"...Earning A's in People Skills at Andover
By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF

ANDOVER, Mass. -- Perhaps there have been other presidential candidates who have dressed in drag, flaunting their legs from beneath a (fairly short) white skirt. But George W. Bush is probably the only one who has done it in front of a camera..."

Photo of Bush appearing on the front page of his high school newspaper at Andover, showing him wearing a dress, sweater, bra, and wig. You can even see bandaids on his legs from where he shaved himself.

11. well, well
That would tend to support the alternative to my hypothesis--unless of course Bush began presenting indications of Korsakoff Syndrome in high school, which would mean that he was more or less weaned on booze. Hmmm. You know, his mother.

Of course, both could be true. Bush began sniffing panties for psychosexual gratification, but later he learned to use his fetish as a study aid.
