... and I wouldn't dare say the latter is the case, not only because I have tremendous respect for the guy, but simply because it ain't true.

Warren's invocation is laden with symbolism, and I really despise the message that it carries.

1. Wouldn't Lowery's benediction be laden with symbolism then as well?
Something like a "Warren is where we unfortunately are, Lowery is what we are aiming for"?

6. I'm absolutely certain that Warren accepted the invitation knowing that it's a slap at him
Makes perfect sense.

Sure, that symbolism has some poetry to it and certainly is attractive... but do you honestly believe that it's an honest portrayal of the intent? Seriously?

7. I honestly have no idea.
It was the first thing that came into my mind, since the invocation comes first and the benediction last. However, I do think that if you believe that Warren is symbolic, then Lowery has to be symbolic as well.

9. I'm not so sure he knows it's a slap. He strikes me as a first class egotist.
I'm almost certain he's puffed up about the invitation. I don't trust the guy, I don't think he's going to listen to Obama, he's in this for one person and one person only, himself. I think he's an arrogant SOB who couldn't care less what Obama or anybody else thinks. He's got his niche and now that niche is a little more "respectable."

It is depressing to this straight but not narrow liberal woman in my late 60s.

3. the message it carries is that Obama is willing work with people he disagrees with if
there are some issues which they have common ground. This is quite different than Bush.

This is indeed change.

5. Let me quote something that both Rev. Lowery and Huckster Warren know by heart
Revelation 3:14-16 (NRSV)

“And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the origin of God’s creation: 'I know your works; you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of my mouth.'"
