Two People Want to Get Married, What's the Problem?
I got blasted for defending "brother-sister" love. One person said "That's INCEST"! Yes, it's a social taboo, and some people get sick/disgusted just thinking about it. But it's also two consenting adults. Why should they be kept from marrying?

Is there any good reason? Wouldn't it be violating their civil rights to keep them from marrying?

Or is the only reason for preventing this, especially if they aren't planning to have children, that people think it's disgusting?

5. I don't know how many of these "brother-sister" couples are out there.
I mean, it'd be like extending marriage rights to a man and a cornplant-- it'd only affect like one guy.

11. It doesn't happen very often.
Once in a long while, maybe a brother and sister fall in love. Again, that is not my business if they are two consenting adults. I do have an issue with child abuse or rape, but I do not see where it is anyone's goddamned business what grown-ups choose to do with each other. Love is love. It's so hard to find that it really shouldn't matter who the two consenting adults are.

There are laws against some things everyone wants to do. (Like not pay for things in stores. Skip taxes. Park right in front of the theater)

There are other laws to express a social view of something that people avoid naturally; eating human flesh, marrying siblings, suicide. Taboo laws.

Very few brother and sister pairs would ever want to get married, assuming they were raised together.

And the few who did... what the hell do I care? The incidence of genetic problems is higher, but we don't forbid marriages between two people who are much more likely to have a child with sickle-cell. Should anyone with Huntington's in the family be allowed to marry anyone? The child of someone with Huntington's is likelier to have a genetically defective child than an average brother-sister pair.

17. Uhhmm.... Science?
It's a public health issue. Family inbreeding his higher birth defect, lifelong illness, and mortality rates.

I'm guessing you knew this, though, as you put a little disclaimer in there.

...and of course people who "aren't planning" to have children don't ever have them?

18. If you really see this as a serious problem, maybe you should try to change the law.
If you and your sister or brother feel discriminated against, take it to court. I don't understand it, frankly, but that's no excuse for me to stand in your way.
