I think it's just something to fill time. The media is full-on 24/7 nowadays. They spend sometime doing real news, some time doing analysis, and the rest of the time yakking about bullshit. The groping and the smoking thing go in to the yakking about bullshit category to me.
Smears will be handled my talk radio and some of those may bubble up to the MSM for a minute or two. As long as he is popular though, smearing the president doesn't serve the interests of the MSM.
