57. I have mixed feelings on Arnold
Edited on Mon Dec-08-08 01:52 AM by CalGator
I won't and didn't vote for him simply because he made the unforgivable sin of promoting the murderer in chief in 2004, but if all Repubs were like him we'd have a far better nation now than with Repubs like Palin, W, McConnell, etc. in power. I think what really has held me to that vision of him is his opposition--however late--of Prop h8. I haven't heard some fairly liberal and prominent Democrats support the overturning and opposition to the proposition as Ahnold has done.

To put it another way, he is a step below Lincoln Chafee (who openly opposed W* in 2004) among Republicans in my book.

Groping ladies on and off the set is yet another reason to find the man repulsive.

The California Budget going down the tubes is yet another reason to find this man ineffective and disgusting.

I wish he had stayed in the Senate. He really hasn't been all that great as governor. Most of New Jersey's problems aren't his fault but he hasn't really fixed anything. He is up for reelection next year. He hasn't been a great governor, but I would much rather he win again than a Republican.

I'm hoping that Lisa Madigan will run against him in the primary in 2010. Otherwise, I'll have to sit out the election. I can't, I won't vote for him again.

Of course, Blagojevich could be indicted by then, so it would be a moot point.

22. I'm a big fan of Gov. Granholm
She's done a very good job keeping Michigan afloat during one of the worst economic times in our state's history. Many blame her for our economy troubles but it's not her fault. She was handed a collapsing auto industry and has done the best with what she's been handed. I hope she stays to finish her term but if she does get an offer to join the Obama administration, I'll wish her well.

70. I agree on the crooked part. But he is a horrible governor.

The first accusation of criminality against the man was that he did not follow proper procedures in shutting down an illegal dump. Hardly a devastating indictment.

As for "pay-to-play" accusations, the Rezko trial has already demonstrated that Rezko went to Springfield not knowing anybody and quickly came under the influence of the GOP's transition team, continuing the GOP's corruption. Until I see evidence that Blagojevich knew exactly what Rezko was doing, I am not buying Blagojevich's guilt in that matter.

However, as an executive he has just been horrendous. He seems to have modeled his gubenatorial office off the Bush administration's: he dictates then expects everyone to follow. Admittedly, those refusing to follow Blago are themselves led by some pretty small-minded pols. But they were f'ing elected just like Blago. They have just as much business in the decision making process as the governor, and it seems to be the governor more than anyone else refusing to cooperate.

Look at the "seniors ride free" program. After months of negotitions in which Blagojevich gets almost everything he demanded in the first place, everyone reaches an agreement, legislation is quickly rushed through both chambers, then Blago suddenly says, "no, I want to add free rides for seniors". No mention of this before. Refuses to bump this brand new idea to the following year's agenda. And doesn't even provide any fucking funds for the program; just forces Chicago to add a new entitlement program while sticking Chicago with the entire bill.

Didn't mind too much the first term. He was after all bucking some real crooks. But I have concluded voting for his re-election was my worst vote ever.

79. i just know that mike madigan, et al
are fucking with the guy, big time. i don't think madigan even thinks of himself as elected any more. i think he thinks his is anointed by god or something. or the devil, which may be true.

but yeah, that whole senior thing is quite the joke. gotta wonder where that came from.
i just have a soft spot in my heart for stupid wonks. listen to the guy give the state of the state address, any you can't deny that the guy loves his job. i don't think he loves the power. i don't think he is just there to pass out goodies. i think he genuinely loves his job. makes me misty eyed.

but, lisa will be a fine governor, too.

John Lynch is nominally a Democrat, and he is better than the dreadful alternatives the GOP has put up (the crooked Craig Benson, the hapless Jim Coburn, the not ready for prime time Joe Kenney), but he's a bowl of oatmeal. Bland, unexciting, competent but not creative or innovative.

58. What is so sad about this is Blagojevich ran as a reformer.
When he first ran in 2002, he was going to clean up the mess that George Ryan left. He was going to sweep out the corruption that is permeating state government. I was so damned happy to vote for him. Particularly after almost 20 years of Republican control of the Governor's mansion.

And here we are today. Nothing has changed. Nothing. Rod Blagojevich is a crook, like everyone else.

Edited on Sun Dec-07-08 11:01 PM by Jennicut
so while I did not vote for her (I just can't bring myself to vote for Repubs unless the Dem is a criminal) she is okay. I am neutral about her. She actually did a good job taking over for John Roland, our former Rethug governor who went to jail for kickbacks. She even refused to fight the courts here over the issue of gay marriage and gays can legally wed in CT.

I voted for my mayor, John DeStefano, for governor in 06. I think he would have been an improvement, but Jodi Rell doesn't bother me that much. She has been prochoice because it doesn't pay for a Republican in office in CT not to be. I'm glad she sided with gay rights, too, so I'll give her that.

Guess we're lucky here in CT. Our bad Republicans tend to self destruct by themselves...

I didn't vote for her in 2006, but wasn't horribly upset that she won again.

She's decent, I suppose - I haven't seen her do too much to ruin the state. Maybe a little too pro-business instead of pro-worker, but with a state that has lots of industry jobs, like UTC (Sikorsky, Pratt & Whitney, Carrier, Otis Elevator, Hamilton Standard) and others, it's important to keep those employers happy so the jobs stay in the state.

how to help our economy, but she can take the time to campaign for Sarah Palin.

Gov. Linda Lingle is a JOKE. She can't spare a few days out of her schedule to talk to Obama about his home state's situation? What a waste.

We also gave him the largest margin of victory of all the states (excluding DC of course). I hope she pays for this. She obviously won't work well with him so I hope that kisses her congressional dreams goodbye.

On paper, he's more "moderate" than I'd like, but in practical terms, I have a hard time faulting him. He's doing what he can to dig the state out from under the rubble of many years of bad Republican tax policy and resulting shortfalls in education and transportation infrastructure, and he may not survive a reelection bid in 2010.

I'm not the most up-to-date on state politics (something I'm in the midst of rectifying) but from what I can tell, he's been pretty good.

71. We have Democrat Chet Culver here in Iowa and I think he's done a fine job so far.

There's been a few stumbles but for the most part I think he's doing well.

73. Since she is abandoning us to the right in an already red state to head the DHS
I'm not too happy with my Governor. She wasn't very liberal, but now we will have a Republican step into the job, and we really don't need that kind of abuse in Arizona at this crucial time.

He supported Obama from day 1 and he is a very good Governor, I wish we could re-elect him for a 3rd term:-)

82. I've got to deal with NOT "my man Mitch"
Personally, he strikes me as being a rather smug and arrogant prick. That was the "vibe" that I got from him the instant he was elected and he hasn't done a lot to change my mind since. He was Bush's former Budget Director, which pretty much tells you a lot about him. He rammed through privatization of public assistance services that has (negatively) impacted my wife directly and IMHO made a mockery of the system. Plus, their benefits suck and it takes my wife forever to earn personal/sick/vacation time compared to when she worked for the state.
OTOH I have to say that I do appreciate his reform of and increased funding to our child welfare system (of which- full disclosure- I am an employee) and he's not some crazy fundie either. His concerns are more economic rather than social and back when the fundie nutjobs were furiously trying to enact a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage he did nothing to push it or campaign for it in the legislature (which would've had to ratify it twice and then send it to the voters for final passage) and I believe he even caught some flak for meeting with a local gay church during his first campaign and issuing a transgender-friendly/anti-discrimination executive order as it pertains to state government as soon as he got into office, so I guess he's not as bad as he could be. Frankly, here in Indiana, there are not a whole lot of differences between Republicans and Democrats.
However, I DO find it interesting that he was able to help improve our child welfare system yet keep us as part of the state whereas he felt the only way that he felt he could improve public assistance services ONLY by privatizing it and, ironically, adding more layers of "red tape" to the provision of public assistance services (it now takes two workers, one private and one state, to establish eligibility and authorize benefits instead of having one worker doing both).
Of course, I'm sure the fact that the current social services director formerly worked with the company (ACS) that "won" the contract to privatize public assistance services had absolutely NOTHING to do with it.
