The Marine Corp Hymn's most famous line came from fighting the Barbary pirates:

....as did the term "Leathernecks".

Now... economic meltdown, two hot wars, and a world in general turmoil aren't enough... he has to go about battling PIRATES?

Arrggghhh.....

4. Piracy never really died out
The South China Sea is a veritable hotbed of piracy. Has been ever since the Vietnam War. The Chinese government has been busy executing captured pirates who've been raising hell in the area.

With the further deterioration of civil order in Somalia, some fishermen who are hard on their luck have taken up arms, acquired speedboats, and are looking to make a quick buck on the high seas at the expense of innocent tourists, merchants, etc.

5. I guess he better start making nice with Flying Spaghetti Monster!
Pirates are under-represented in Washington. Alaska just booted Captain Stevens after all.

13. Yes, November the 10th 1775 in a pub.
They got the name Leathernecks from their high collar uniforms used to resist swords from cutting their throats when engaged in battle.

15. a friend of mine who works on cruise ships told me about pirates a couple years ago..
I thought he was nuts, but here we are. Cruise ships have avoided that area for some due to risks to passengers.

Unbelieveable.
