Exit polling also showed that Democrats who supported Sen. Hillary Clinton during the primaries overwhelming voted for Obama in the general election, 84 percent to 15 percent for McCain. <\b>

For the poll, more than 16,000 people who had just voted were selected at random to fill out questionnaires.

Many voters told the pollsters that they made up their minds early in the campaign season, with 61 percent saying they made up their minds before September, another 13 percent saying they decided in September and 17 percent saying they made their selection last month.

5. Just my opinion, but I think the 15% of Hillary supporters who voted for McCain

never were Democrats to start with. There were some Independents and Republicans who would have voted for Hillary just to see a woman President. They weren't voting gender, not party.

13. I agree with you. As a matter of fact the exit polls in PA & WV showed

exactly that. There were Repubs voting in open primaries, who actually told exit pollsters that they voted for Hillary, but planned to vote for McCain in the general. The PUMA's were hardcore Repubs, with a sprinkling of conservative Democrats, and a handful of women tossed into the mix; in other words....SORE LOSERS.

16. I agree. While I supported Obama in the primaries, many of my friends were Hillary

supporters, and they, without hesitation, moved into the Obama camp after the primaries were over. The PUMA "movement" was a myth, invented by the right, to sow discord and they failed. In addition, the PUMA myth inspired John McCain to select Sarah Palin, so the right's "operation chaos" backfired on them.

Our office was pretty much divided between Obama and Clinton. We're in NY and Clinton has always been good for the type of non-profit organization that we are, and a lot of us are middle-aged women. (Actually, a couple of us middle-aged white women were always for Obama and one of Hillary's biggest supporters among us was a man so I shouldn't pigeonhole like that.) There was difference of opinion but there was no rancor as far as I could tell. Nor was there ever any question that each of us would support our nominee, whichever one it was. By Election Day everyone had long gotten over any private disappointment they might have had over Hillary.
