"Yes We Can!" World Joins in Unspeakable Triumph of Hope and Joy
Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 07:58 PM by Land Shark
From Le Monde: http://www.lemonde.fr/opinions/article/2008/11/05/sorry-we-can-t-par-robert-sole_1115209_3232.html

(Replies are invited to ADD COUNTRIES to the list, with links if you have them! I'll start with Finland, the country of my heritage and of my wife's citizenship. She was disfranchised as a non-citizen, though a permanent resident and taxpayer, but she, too, shares in America's victory)

On the American Presidential Election, a columnist in France writes:

Sorry, We Can't

Sorry. No column today. The keyboard is not responding. History is a page being turned. Three words on the screen: "Yes we can." {...} it is equally impossible to joke with an event that makes you weep for joy. The first worldwide good news since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 needs more than a pirouette or an amused wink. At this moment - but for how long ? - we can say with far more conviction than on 11 September 2001 : we are all Americans.

I too might write things. I stop. This strong voice is heard most clearly in silence, though it's also in the roar of crowds and the hugs of Americans.

Our family couldn't afford $5 for an Obama sign (supply and demand I guess!).

We drive an "unmarked" car, no bumper-stickers. You might be behind us on the road, and never know the joy inside our car...

You'll never know the full extent of the tears of joy in this house, or the celebration around the world, unless and until we let it all in...

But when we do, we know it's a worldwide explosion of joy, hope and tears.

3. I am teary-eyed with joy again . . .
. . . knowing that BHO is so well thought of in the world -- and the U.S., by association, is no longer being viewed as an object of disdain and derision.

(BTW, I am also of Finnish descent!)

6. Paul, very well said. I've cried, uncontrollable sobbing, three times ...
... since my childhood.

Tuesday 4 Nov 2008, ~ 725pm PST, was one of those three times ... and it lasted for quite a long while.

We now entire the first American Renaissance with a brilliant President working with all of us to have it persist for generation after generation.

Peace, my friend,
Bob

7. It's as though Obama's election is a bookend to 9/11.
Again, "We are all Americans", but this time the world joins in our joy.

It's an event momentous enough that we can turn the page on our post-9/11 trauma, including the horror of the Bush/Cheney regime.

Cheers, Paul. Thank you for all you've done, and continue to do.

11. It comes back to you, doesn't it?
And as it does, it's surprising and refreshing, and it makes me think about being able to work on what's possible, instead of having to be concentrated on bringing basic justice back.

15. Finland! I love Finland.
Anyway. Very well said. And I have had to just stop and catch my breath these past few days, and smile because we really did something incredible on Tuesday. Really, truly spectacular. I do feel proud to be American again.
