Additional question re: Obama's security

In this picture, you can see two small glass panels flanking Obama at about head level with him. Are those designed to provide additional protection for him or do they serve another purpose? I've seen these when other politicians speak as well, so I assume they are a form of added protection.

They're too small and flimsy to be bulletproof shields or anything like that

If they were protection why not in front of him?

I wonder if they were not shields from wind for the microphone? Don't know though.
