Poll question: How many seats will the Democrats gain in the Senate tomorrow?
We have 51 seats now and we need 60 to have a majority and true control.

I've heard we could gain anywhere from 5 to 7 seats!

I personally believe we'll gain the needed 9 but then again;

it's late (early) and I've had a cocktail! :P

So, what is your prediction?

1. I've been hearing that we could do even better than 9
Maybe up to 12!

3. Woot! Now THAT would be F**ing fantastic!!!
:D

:woohoo:

I hadn't heard that many but I'm hearing a LOT of optimism from the pundits on both sides. :)

Both sides?! Yes!! It's freaking me out!! (It has to be a shell game, doesn't it?) :P

2. If the MSM says we get 5 to 7, we'll get 10 to 14
Edited on Tue Nov-04-08 01:28 AM by DJ13
Remember the shock of 2006 when the MSM were conceding we might get a few seats as the election neared, and it became a rout?

Well things are even worse now for Republicans.

6. How would you feel about it being 8, just short of a majority? Dark clouds with that? n/t

7. It's a mixed blessing actually, filibuster proof senate comes with higher expectations

If the Republicans still have 41, Obama can still use Congress as a whipping post (at least somewhat). But I don't make that prediction based on what I like, I make it based on what I think is going to happen. I think there's a very good chance that Hagan wins NC and Merkley wins OR and most of the other once close races leaning our way are pretty sure bets at this point. That puts us at 58. I think Franken is going to win despite the polls giving the edge to Coleman and that gives us 59. Lunsford and Musgrove are unfotunately going to lose because despite the fact that Obamania is sweeping most of the nation, there are still red states and blue states and a complete depolarization doesn't happen overnight.

Chambliss and Martin is probably going to go to a runoff because of the libertarian candidate and I would give Chambliss the slight edge at this point. But it's hard to say what will happen between now and the runoff.

8. Wouldn't 58 or 59 seats give the Democrats some leaning power though?
And we still have (I) Bernie Sanders! ;)

9. 58 or 59 gives us some serious leverage
We still have to hold all of our members and take a few Republicans but generally it's not hard to find a few Republicans that will abandon party loyalty for the spoils that come with brokering the compromise on major pieces of legislation. If Snowe or Collins plan on running for another term you can damn well bet they will vote with Obama. I think Specter will also vote with Obama on some key issues because he's legacy shopping at this point and he unlike most Republicans he actually does know right from wrong.

I also wonder if McCain might give Obama his vote or two at this point given that he may blame his loss on the right wingers who forced him to pick Palin instead of Lieberman or Ridge. But honestly I think that McCain will be more pissed at Obama because he believes it was his turn and that Obama didn't deserve it.

10. I'm feeling pretty good about
AK, CO, NM, NH, OR, and VA, slightly nervous but more positive than negative about NC, and think we have a 50/50 shot at the MN seat (even though it's the one I'm probably hoping for a victory in more than any other.) So, my most pessimistic prediction is we wind up with 57 seats and my most optimistic is 59... though I'm not sure what the "LIEberman factor" will be after this election...

13. Thanks for that, last_texas_dem... - the "LIEberman factor" ... UGH!!!
I hear you. It's a huge gamble with him and so infuriating! :grr:

But as Hypno_Tron said; as did you; 57 or 58 will be a good thing

and a helluva a lot better then 51 seats! ;)

A :toast: to tomorrow's winners and I hope that it's...

"The People" as the winners; this time!!
