5. Delivering food is a great idea for those who can't phonebank.
Edited on Sun Nov-02-08 08:44 PM by pirhana
Last week when I was phonebanking, someone brought in chicken and rice.
The guy that was managing the phone room was so excited saying that he's been living on fast food
for weeks.

26. We have people assigned to bring in food
and then more and more shows up in addition to that. You should see how much food there is at our local office! A lot of it is baked goods and snacks, but also lots of pizza, sub sandwiches, salads, pasta tonight, bagels and muffins in the mornings and on and on. There's going to be so much left over, I'm sure.

9. I've never canvassed - yet.
Everytime I volunteer (during 2004 as well) they always put me on the phone.
That's okay- I'm good on the phone, but canvassing would be fun.

Good luck!!

10. Tomorrow, unfortunately
I have to go to work.

Today, I worked on GOTV, getting voter information out to registered Democrats and received wonderful responses. Tuesday, taking the day off because I won't be worth a damn at my job anyway because I'll be so nervous, I'm working at polls being a watcher and finding out which local Dems haven't voted and making phone calls to get them to the polls! Tuesday night, I hope we're cracking the bubbly!

11. Just gonna cut and paste a previous reply in the hopes that more people get up and Get Out The Vote!
Have knocked on 53 doors today and will do it all over again tomorrow. We only have 3 sections left to complete tomorrow.

Got a call from Raleigh headquarters about canvassing and GOTV on election day followed by a call from Chicago office regarding a GOTV big meeting (poll watchers, runners, etc.) at the Dem Office in Lillington tomorrow night - Can you come? Oh hell yea count me in!!

Chicago warned me my home turf may not be available and I might have to cover a little town called Barbeque, NC but hell, I'll do anything for Obama this election.

I expect to be totally up to my armpits in GOTV on Tuesday, either taking folks to the polls, calling in numbers or poll watching.

If you've got some time, don't think you can't do ANYTHING, you CAN do SOMETHING.

Just do it people, WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!

29. I knocked on almost 200 doors today all day. We don't have enough help.
We haven't gotten through half of the packs yet. Not enough volunteers. They keep "flaking" (not showing up when they say they will). I was supposed to be in the office all day directing traffic and tallying the results and keeping track of the walk packs out & in. Unfortunately, there weren't even enough of us to walk so I just walked all day and nobody was in the office all day--even the organizer had to go out walking all day.

We are really getting bummed out because we have so much work to do and not enough canvassers to do it. The other smaller counties are already on their second walks. We have too big of a small town but not enough volunteers. We have a core base that's been walking since the primaries but we can only do so much. We are upset that nobody has come to help us. We're supposed to have 52 high schoolers on Tuesday but that doesn't help us this weekend and tomorrow.

I hope some people show up tomorrow so we can get caught up. It took me all day by myself to do 2 walk packs!

37. That is so sad. Do you guys get phone numbers of people that sign up?
The office I'll be work out of calls to remind us.

It will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow - when I signed up, the entire sheet was full of volunteers - all the phones will be manned. It will be interesting to see how many show up.

I don't get it - why would people sign up if they're not going to show up?
Oh yeah - things come up, but only a true emergency is more important than winning this election.

39. Awwww man..........so sorry Indiana_Dem.
I hope you get some real big help to get you through the next 48 hours - sincerely.

I hope the flake rate isn't because people are getting complacent and feel the Dems have it in the bag?

They originally combined 2 counties here and because there's so much real estate to cover between them all, just opened a small satellite office to keep volunteers from having to commute back and forth to the farther away location just get their supplies.

It's a good ride but much better than the alternative. Still, we only had 4 volunteers yesterday and 3 today and it takes so much time to wander through these areas. We feel lucky when we can get a housing development with relatively large concentrations of doors to knock but most of the time we have to travel by car to get to the 2 or 3 rural homes in one area then back to the car to drive to the other sparsely populated areas. It's a mess and they need help still.

I keep asking people to volunteer but usually they don't have the time, have kids, work, etc. and just making sure they get out and vote seems to be the only real morale boosters.

Keep your chin up, please - you all are doing everything you can!

46. Sounds like you need help, too!
I think it's either complacency like you say, and also burnout for those of us that have been canvassing every Wednesday and Sunday since the primaries in April!!! We've never stopped since April! The offices stayed here and open since our primary was in May. We've had all kinds of events along with the canvassing ever since then. Still, it's just a core base of about 10 of us that continue on. That's a core of 10 for a county of 50,000 and 10,000 voters who voted in 2004. Now we can't possibly get through these voters in 4 days with just 10-15 of us! Especially not 2-3times like they want us to!

i get out at 1pm each day and up until this past week i was spending all of my free time at the HQ. this last week there were/this coming week there are dress rehearsals every night for a musical i'm starring in so i can't skip out! tuesday, though, no school - i'll be at the hq from morning til about 5 or 6...gah, i'm so annoyed that i've become so busy this close to the election! but i put in a lot of time and effort in the weeks leading up to now, so i don't feel as bad.

have fun, everyone! when youre feeling overwhelmed by the calls or the canvassing, take a step back and just relax.

Just got home after 5 hour drive. Rural MO is looking GOOD for Obama, BTW. In a town of 2000 there were 12 volunteers out on the streets Saturday alone. This is former Bush territory.

Tuesday I'm doing the door hanger thing here in IL in Aurora, then watching returns with family that nite.

I've never seen anything like this organization!
