SIX (6) TIMES MORE to OBAMA... Guess who?
Military donations favor Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. soldiers have donated more presidential campaign money to Democrat Barack Obama than to Republican John McCain, a reversal of previous campaigns in which military donations tended to favor GOP White House hopefuls, a nonpartisan group reported Thursday.

Troops serving abroad have given nearly six times as much money to Obama's presidential campaign as they have to McCain's, the Center for Responsive Politics said.

59. Copyright lawers in the house - a question
That page seems a bit odd to me for two reasons.

1. It makes it sound like Freepers are regularly posting entire articles. Isn't that almost always a copyright violation?

2. Can a website actually prevent you from posting excerpts? I thought that in the context of discussing the article in question that was almost always legal.

Are the freepers just retarded or something?

And it is not the Rethugs! We are trying. We want you home. We want you to have every benefit and reward for all you've done. We care! Sorry but after all those stories about not enough armor, less benefits than Nam vets, and quick returns back overseas and extensions of time due to Bush's delusional message from his god to free Iraq and get oil, that is exactly how I feel. Though my dad was retired military, I have no actual family members is the service now but I feel all service members are "MY FAMILY."

8. Let's hope their votes/ballots make it back over here
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/6086931.html

As the hotly contested 2008 presidential campaign nears its finish, members of the Texas congressional delegation say they have been fielding complaints from military families about problems in overseas delivery of ballots to active duty troops.

(snip)

A post-election survey by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission in 2006 showed that 992,000 absentee ballots had been requested by the estimated 6 million eligible military service personnel and U.S. citizens living overseas.

Of those, 330,000 ballots were actually returned and counted by local elections officials— including 6,300 overseas absentee ballots from troops who voted in Texas.
"If this kind of deprivation of the right to vote were occurring in the continental United States, it would just rock the country," said Cornyn, who has asked Attorney General Michael Mukasey to launch a civil rights investigation into the problems.

Overseas absentee voting has become an even bigger concern this year because of the large projected turnout in the presidential election between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain. Some 145,000 absentee ballots had been mailed to overseas military voters by mid-October.

My car, has 5 Obama stickers/magnets, guy down the street has a new bumper sticker that says, "Had enough? Vote Democrat!" Just down the street from him, Obama/Biden sign in the yard. My neighbor, voted Obama by absentee in state of NC, One NOBAMA sticker on a big ol' Dodge truck, One McCain/MILF sticker on a scuzz heads vehicle.

76. Yet I heard about the "Dear Mr. Obama" video...
... of a soldier explaining why he won't be voting for Obama and why the Iraq war wasn't a "mistake" before he walks away so that you can see his prosthetic leg. The local radio station played the whole thing on-air this morning, and makes it available on its Web site. I guess it's "news" when 12.5 million people watch it on YouTube?

43. When you add in Ron Paul contributors it clearly paints the
picture that soldiers want out of Iraq.

"Among soldiers serving overseas at the time of their donations, 134 gave a total of $60,642 to Obama while 26 gave a total of $10,665 to McCain. That was less than the amount received by Republican Ron Paul, who collected $45,512 from 99 soldiers serving abroad, the report said."

In 2005, 14.5% of US military regular forces were Black, African, or African-American, compared with 12.85% of the US population. Due to falling enlistment rates among this demographic since 2005, these numbers may be closer to parity now.

You know how 'a picture speaks more than a thousand words'? These donations from our men and women in Iraq has the same effect. Wonderful.

Funny, just yesterday ,(I don't know which article), a repub was lamenting the probability that the military vote wouldn't be here to be counted for the repub party. Well surprise, when they do show up, it wont be for McCain...our soldiers know what's going on even when they're a world away.

58. but look at the numbers
It is good PR for Obama, but I'd be cautious about reading *too* much into it... look at the numbers...

Donors (over $200): 859 Obama, 558 McCain

Those serving overseas: 134 Obama (contributing about $60k), 26 McCain (about $10k)

This is a very tiny percentage of the total troops (and not a scientific sample of them), so it may be a stretch to make any assumption about who the troops support from these figures alone.

And I still love the story.

People don't realize how many soldiers really support Democrats.

Maybe the soldiers know that far more Democrats have served in the military, and we don't just TALK about supporting the troops, we vote for better benefits for them.
