I just realized it! After all these years of being so politically opinionated, drifting further left each year, even after being active in Wes Clark's Maryland campaign, it just sunk in!
i'm no 18 year old spring chicken. I'm a middle-aged naturalized citizen, August 2002. In 2004, I was all geared to vote for Kerry, but was suddenly scheduled for surgery. The absentee ballot didn't arrive in time. I remember lying in bed, still feeling like hell, mind foggy from the anesthesia and pain killers, slipping in and out of sleep, watching the election returns. Next morning, I was awaked by a tech taking my blood, and i asked her, did it really happen? She nodded glumly, yes, Kerry had lost. Later on, i awoke again, wondering if i had imagined that as well, but then my doctor walked in, looking totally dejected and nodding her head in disgust. It was incredibly sad; i didn't think i could feel any sicker, but I did.
I would have loved to cast a vote against Bush in 2004, and was disappointed about not having the opportunity, but also knew my vote would not make a difference in Maryland. This year, my vote won't make much of a difference either, since Maryland will be solidly behind Obama. But it will be such a privilege to cast a vote for that man. I can't wait.
