My dad was a union plumber his whole life. He is dead now but I have thought about him many times during this election. He was a life long democrat who forgave me for voting for Reagan the first time he ran. I thought I was smarter than my dad (just started college) and my dad didn’t “Get It” about Jimmy Carter. Needless to say I voted for Mondale in 1984 and every democratic candidate since. And I never stopped apologizing to my dad!
My dad would have loved this Joe the Plumber issue. First off, I want to let everyone know, that real plumbers are not as stupid as Joe is.
Real plumbers usually pay their taxes and do not have tax liens against them. Real Plumbers also get something called a “Plumbers License” which lets you legally perform plumbing tasks for money. Joe didn’t have one.
And one thing I know for sure, real plumbers, who were making $40,000 a year, and wanted to buy a company that netted $250,000 a year, would not base the decision on a 3% tax increase. This would mean about $1000 more a year in taxes for a $250,000 business.
So Joe must have said to himself: “Hmmm, If Obama is elected, I can continue to make $40,000 a year or I can make $250,000 a year and have to pay $1000 more in taxes. That sounds like a bad deal to me. I think I’ll just stick to my $40,000 a year job!!!”
Let’s face it. Joe has the business sense of a loaf of bread. Any real Plumber or Baker or Police Officer or Teacher or homeless person would choose to buy the business that would make them $250,000 and figure out a way to pay the extra $1000 in taxes. And most would be extremely happy to do it.
And the socialism argument is a joke also. Under Obama’s tax plan I get back $1000 and under McCain’s plan I get back $300. The way I see it, McCain is taking my $700 and spreading the wealth to rich people, where Obama wants the money in my pocket. Both Obama and McCain have a progressive tax, which is always spreading the wealth around, but Obama just wants to spread it from the top down and McCain wants to spread it from the bottom up. Both plans are the same; the only difference is where the spread comes from and where it goes to.
The sad thing here is that the same people who seem to endorse McCain are the ones he cares the least about. 95% of the McCain supporters will get more money in their paychecks from an Obama administration than they will from a McCain administration. But all he has to say is “socialism” and “spread the wealth” and these people are too uninformed to know that he is lying. Or they hate Obama so bad they don’t care.
The good news is that the lies about taxes and Ayres and everything else have not worked. And a majority of Americans know John McCain is desperate and out of real answers. It is a small majority, maybe 55%, but that is all we need for a landslide next Tuesday!
So the real reason for this post was to make sure that you all know that real plumbers are not as dumb as Joe. My Dad would have wanted you to know!
