Too soon to start thinking about McCain's Senate seat?
:D

He's gettin' up there in years and I think he'll probably resign his seat after this. Not just because of the ego thing, but also because his own party really doesn't like him much and he's pretty much lost any influence.

1. He's plummeting in the polls in AZ right NOW, I'd hate to see how he'd do next hear.
He's Class III, up for reelection in '10.

2. I think he'll retire and Janet Napolitano will win his seat in 2010.
Fine by me, as long as Terry Goddard is Governor.

3. It's kinda sad that his legacy will be forever tied to his presidential loss.
He should have stayed out of this one...another bad decision.

4. If he resigns, we get it by default. The governor is a Dem.
Janet Napolitano. Then we'd have somebody running as an incumbent in 2010.

5. He might wait till 2010. Then again he's a maverick
;) so he might just say screw 'em!

6. No

Arizona law requires the governor to fill a vacant Senate seat with a member of the same party.

However, I think McClown will serve the rest of his term and then quietly fade into obscurity with a retirement before his seat is next up.

7. I didn't know that.
I'd been under the impression that it's the same everywhere, i.e. governor's discretion.

10. A Few States . . .

. . . do it Arizona's way. Hawaii, which helps us, with two older Dem senators and a Repunk governoid in Lingle. Wyoming, where Dave Freudenthal, the Dem governor, was unable to do anything but select from a list provided by the state Goopers when Craig Thomas passed away.

8. He probably wouldn't resign under a Dem governor
OTOH I can't imagine how he'll handle being in the Senate under a PRESIDENT Obama either after this election.

My prediction: He probably will try to hang on for another two years and won't run again.

11. Dem Governor Doesn't Matter . . .

. . . for this purpose; see my post above. However, I agree with your prediction about him riding it out (mostly to set up his Lottish lobbying career and mend fences from his disastro-campaign, again, to help his lobbying career) and not seeking reelection. He's done.
