The picture is coming
There are, of course, many different ways to divide homo sapiens. We can be divided by race, sex, nationality, religion and affection for Ben and Jerry Ice Cream.

It has occured to me that humanity is divided by this picture. There are those of us that lived before the earth was pictured from the moon. We knew that once they got on the moon that they would train the cameras back on us and we would see ourselves from another planet for the first time.

We knew it would be blue.

However knowing about the picture and seeing the picture was too different things. Once we saw it we changed how we understood the world and the world became a whole lot smaller and great deal more beautiful. People all across the world saw themselves differently.

That picture changed how we see outselves, our neighbors and even our enemies. It changed the world that it pictured.

There are those younger folks who grew up always having seen the picture. They didn't have to change because the changed world was what they grew up in. Some of us are BP and some AP (Before/After Picture). We could have reset our calendars. No picture has ever had as deeply a psychological impact on the human race as this one picture. The entire Apollo program was justified with one click of the camera.

Sometime in the next few weeks another picture will be taken. It will show a beautiful African American Family in the White House. It might be taken during a preliminary visit or after they have moved in.

Like the Apollo program we know that we are on course for that picture. There will be an iconic shot that will forever mark that the human universe has gone to a new place.

We will all change when we see that picture. For some it will mean that a deep and dangerous river has been crossed and that a lifetime of frustration and disappointment in history will be lifted. For many young folks it will mean that the life that lays before them will have more possibilities than ever expected. Everyone will be changed in their own unique way.

In 1978 I taught a 3 month course for company executives in rural Thailand. It was designed to try and recreate an international experience for them and everything was to be in English. We showed all kinds of videos. One time we showed the Wide World of Sports boxing match between the United States and Cuba. When the Americans won they played the national anthem and out in the middle of a rural isolated area these 20 Thais insisted on standing when they heard the American national anthem. They were standing not for what we are or what we do but for the promise that is America. It is the promise for hope and change that the whole world desires. I could tell a hundred stories from the talking with communist leaders of the Peoples Republic of Vietnam immediately after the war or working with Iranians in the middle of the hostage crises that there is a persistant and even strange attraction and devotion that the world holds for the improbable proposition that the United States will eventually do the right thing and lead the world out of the current mess.

In a few weeks THAT picture will cross the globe.

Just like that beautiful picture of that small insignificant cosmic marble this coming picture will effect billions of people that have never stepped foot in the United States. For some reason I think of ethnic Koreans in Japan who are now reaching into their third generation of disenfranchisement who will see that picture - can they not begin to think that somehow their future is not enslaved by the past?

Of course an entire continent that is our original motherland that gave birth to us all and then was passed by in modernity will be strongly effected. I imagine that there shock will be the strongest. It will raise hope and expectations. I should think that it will also create an appetite for accountability for change - and change now.

How many slum children in Cairo, New Dehli, Soweto, Dhaka, Djakarta will gaze on that picture and wonder about their own future.

Of all the countries where it could have the most significant unintended impact I would guess Burma. Ruled by a very small minority where the business, religious, educational and social structures have all rejected the Junta that oppresses them, a charismatic leader that has been under a decade old house arrest, I wonder if a simple picture of hope and change will inspire an entire country to stand up and say, "not now, not this time and never again".

Of course that is all speculation. All I know is that the picture is coming and it will change the world and how we look at our country for ever, it will change people in other places and how they see themselves and how they see us.

127. Wow! Just TRY to imagine a GLOBAL party!
I was 14 when the picture of our planet was taken. However, we were still under the Cold War global fears, so there wasn't a global party.

With THIS new picture, things could be different. We might for THE FIRST TIME EVER experience a GLOBAL PARTY!!! I find just the thought of it mind blowing! But I'm hopeful that those feelings can be expanded upon to create a more peaceful world.

BTW, Welcome to DU, jasonberlin! :hi:

I've read a lot of really great stuff on DU.
We have so many prolific people on here who post some really, really, great stuff.

Nance Rants comes to mind.

BUT every now and then, someone drops a gem like this and I am rendered speechless.
That is a REALLY wonderful post, and you get a big endorsement from me my friend.

Awesome post, and I think Carl would agree.

40. He's one of the *very* few real heroes I have.
I was devastated when he died. He inspired me in so many ways, in how I try to act, how I think, and my worldview in general.

Right now we have a major lack of scientists who are able to communicate with the average person in the way Sagan did, and I think it really hurts us.

73. The book is what blew me away.
I read that before seeing the show, and have read it about 4 or 5 times since. I get something from it every time. It's very poetic to me in a lot of ways.

I wish I had gotten into him just a bit sooner. I might have taken my science classes a bit more seriously, and not just spent them drawing Conan pictures. :)

101. That's a great idea.
He's one of the few I was thinking of when I mentioned scientists lacking communication skills to the average person. Tyson is very good at that. Not as poetic as Sagan, but the same sense of wonder, and the ability to translate that to the average person. Nova Science Now is a very cool show.

I really like your idea!

I had not heard those words for a while, a long while. I have often wondered what Sagan would have thought about the billions wasted on more bloodshed, coupled with the lack of funding for NASA. For all his efforts, we seemingly have moved backwards, and not just two steps. I hope, as grantcart has so eloquently put it, that our world becomes re-focused on the bigger picture under an Obama presidency. His task is daunting.

Well everyone who's WORTHY and a Christian on that mote will be moving to the small region of Alaska....that refuge for the righteous...when Jesus returns to kill and torture all the unbelievers.

Sarah and her pastor told me so.

See, you science guys know nothing! It's all in The Book....and you don't need nuthin' else.

Man.... that's easy! Sounding like a Right Wing Christian nut. It's like falling off a log. Just say the stupidest things you ever thought of. I had no idea it was so easy. Sounding like it, that is. Actually believing it is beyond my capacity.

K&R

I've wondered about this myself. In my lifetime I have certain historic moments that I will always remember: when the US beat the Russian hockey team, when Nixon left office, 9/11, Katrina, the tsunami, and now Nov. 4, 2008 (and then Jan. 20, 2009). These are things I will remember always. I still have videos, newspapers and pictures of 9/11 even though I never look at them. I plan on capturing everything I can when Obama's elected and then inaugurated. Because those I will look at again, with joy and pride, and I will share those in the future with those not yet born or those too young now to understand it all.

And you know one of my favorite "collectibles" will be The Arizona Republic declaring Obama the winner, nationally AND in Arizona.

45. Most beautiful analogy.
I sometimes let myself start to imagine the joy and relief I will feel after the election, how proud I will be that this beautiful African American family will be in the White House. (I'm White, btw) For a few brief seconds I feel overwhelmed with emotion before I quickly put those thoughts back down. I not only want to be cautious with my soul (it is fragile after 2000 and 2004) but i want to experience it all at once with people I love as we watch those early returns and know we have victory. Then I can give in completely to knowing that the picture is coming. And it will be MOST BEAUTIFUL!

96. you described how I feel exactly
I especially like the way you said your soul is fragile after 2000 and 2004--I feel the same way and I'm sure many people here do too.

Part of the reason I don't dwell in a place of constant excitement about this election is that I remember the hope of Election Day 2004 with a lot of pain, but another reason is that I want the feeling of winning this election--and, as much as that, knowing that the darkest period in American government is finally over--to be new and fresh and like a waterfall of hope, all at once, shared with the people I care about.

And grantcart, what you wrote was absolutely beautiful.

Thank you for one of the best posts in any forum that I have ever seen on the Net. We, in India, all pray that your picture comes to life on November 5th. However, we are a tad worried about reports of votes being flipped by voting machines in many places. Please don't let the neocons rob this election too.

One of my friends told me about this post and I joined this forum just to thank you for putting into words what all of us feel deeply in our hearts.

God Bless You.

I am proud to be a citizen of the most tolerant and multi-cultural nation on earth. We're not perfect, not by a long shot, but if a multi-cultural nation is ever going to work, it will be here in the United States of America.

We're about to show the world that we're better than we have appeared for the last eight years.

Unless, of course, it's stolen again. And I am sick of adding this caveat, but I must do it. Election theft remains a very real possibility.

The United States is a LIBERAL Country.

Thank you. Very beautiful.

As an aside, Thais stand for their own national anthem as a show of their very deep respect for their king. For example, their anthem is played before every movie shown in theaters, accompanied by a slide show of the king doing good things. All stand and are silent. In fact, disrespect of the king is severely punished. I would imagine this tradition would carry over to the anthems of other countries.

Often times I feel bound by my discipline (political science) to the point where I see everything in political terms. However, beyond the political ramifications of an Obama win, the significance of what could happen in the course of world history and what it may mean for everyone moves my soul to the point of tears. The United States of America is on the verge of saying, "Enough!" If we do this, then my faith in this country and its people will be restored.

I have always considered myself an inhabitant of the planet Earth first. I care about the whole world. One of my favorite bumper stickers to come out of the last 8 years of hatred in America = "God bless the whole world - no exceptions!"

In a few weeks THAT picture will cross the globe.

When the first picture with "That One" and his family crosses the globe - it will be a the start of a new day for the Big blue ball. We will start to build a better world together again. Yes we can!

Oh and I like New York Super Fudge Chunk Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream (And I'm from Texas Y'all)

104. Beautiful.
I can imagine the photos of President Obama in cabins in rural villages around the globe, much as Kennedy's photo was often displayed.

The world needs the USA to get with the ecological emergency program and make some major changes toward a more sustainable energy efficient economy to more democratically share the world's resources as other countries work to develop their quality of life with some of the modern conveniences we already enjoy.

I am hoping fervently that the dangerously off-course Republican party will allow our country the Transformational Leadership we vote for.

That was a great essay, and so full of the hope we all feel now.

I recall seeing that picture of Earth for the first time, and it made EVERYONE stop in their tracks and rethink things.

We are at that same crossroads now. I love your bringing in to all of this the need for us to shore up our image as that place of hope in the world.

Who am I dedicating my vote to? All of the people who are choosing hope over hate, young people, old people, city and rural, whatever we see that divides us will now UNITE us.

I dedicate the vote to my young grand-nephew and grand-niece. Their mom is white, their dad is African-American. And I vote fore THEIR future, as well as the WORLD'S future.

111. A beautiful post.
I often reflect on the fact that most Americans really have no idea what this country means to the rest of the world. That is always brought home to me when I hear the stupid anti-French remarks. I think back to the summer I spent there in 1976. One evening in particular always comes to mind. My group was camped in a tiny village in southern France called Fourneaux. We were invited by the mayor to come to the inn that evening. The whole town turned out to see the Americans. We spoke little French, and they spoke less English. But they would call out the names of Americans they admired and cheer, and we would do the same with French names. Then we sang each other songs. The love was palpable.

Even when this country fails utterly to live up to it's best instincts (as it has the past eight years) the world still looks to us to set an example, and simply to stand for the right things. We are, in the best sense, iconic. That is an honor and a responsibility.

You are so right about the impact that picture will have. In one image, it will tell the world that hope is still alive, that we do still stand for all that is best in human nature.

It's not 'in the bag' yet!
There is still PLENTY of work to be done. In order for this to happen we MUST get out the vote!
If we don't get out the vote, and get EVERYONE to the polls, they can still steal it, because given the chance, they WILL.

I, for one, am not slacking off, until AFTER the votes have been counted!

something new each day. And, rarely am I wrong. Sometimes it's something simple, sometimes more complex! But mostly my thoughts are that one should ALWAYS keep and open mind!

Thank you so much for putting into words what so many may soon experience!

and I said I had just read the most moving letter. The tears flowed and I had such a good cry. What that image will do for so so many people.

Your writing is beautiful and I am so grateful that you posted it and I got to read it and think about it all day.

134. What an inspiring, hopeful & introspective post, Grantcart!
This election is truly a global election. The entire world is always watching us, but now they will be cheering instead of quaking in fear.

Thanks for sharing your insight with all of us.

The Age of Aquarius is truly dawning. It is indeed time for this planet to experience some peace for a change.

....what I have been trying to articulate for months.
That is exactly what will happen: a global celebration, not necessarily on the streets but in people's minds and hearts.

Brilliantly put, brilliant post.

151. Poignant
I work with immigrants from all over the planet. Many of the people I work with are immigrants from many different African nations. The tv in the break room is usually turned on some silly station for mindless entertainment--except when something big has been going on during this political season, then the tv is on msnbc.

It fills me with such an inspiring feeling to see the young African immigrants eyes widely gazing upward at the tv to listen to a debate, watch primary election returns, or watch an Obama speech. The older African immigrants are harder, they watch but pretend that they don't care(I think that they really do care, but life has taught them not to get their hopes up, not to believe that a leader can really be on their side). But the young ones are transformed when they see evidence that a young African-American man with a Kenyan father, is winning the many small battles it takes to win the war, and is getting closer to transforming history.

Yes, I look forward to the picture. There will be a lot of dancing at work, and I will be among the dancers.

164. Beautiful message. And you know, I too have seen that picture coming.
In fact there was a picture link of Barack's rise posted here at DU some months back

and in those pictures was one of he and Michelle and the girls at what seemed to be the opened front door of the White House.

I looked at that picture for a long time.

And now, I am going to see the reality of that picture. Just as you said grantcart.

It will have a profound effect on the U.S. and the world. We all await it.O8)

175. I wonder if it is by chance that Obama's symbol is that of an circle
Edited on Mon Oct-27-08 01:48 AM by GetTheRightVote
perhaps for his name 'Obama' or the sun rising over the hills or did the designer of it also see the possibilities and thought of the 'pale blue marble' called earth.

As one poster offered, perhaps it is destiny in the making and the promise of who we are as a nation once again wins over adversity. That we once again are a symbol to the world of what is right and good in a world gone wrong so terribly wrong ? Is MLK's dream, that all should share, coming true ? That white boys and black boys will live and play together, wow, what a beautiful world that he envisioned in his speech. But even more so in this man named Obama who is both of these worlds and so much more. Both white and black, both international and native born, first generation while also country native. Perhaps there are greater forces at work, perhaps...
