Obama denies having inaugural address
Source: Politico

The Obama campaign, anxious to prevent an image of overconfidence, formally and insistently denied a report — seized on by the McCain campaign — that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) already has a draft of an inaugural address.

In remarks in New Mexico on Saturday, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) accused his opponent of taking a “victory lap.”

“Well, my friends, when I pull this thing off I have a request for my opponent,” McCain said, according to Reuters. “I want him to save that manuscript of his inaugural address and donate it to the Smithsonian and put it right next to the Chicago paper that said, 'Dewey Defeats Truman.'”

“NBC Nightly News” repeated the notion that Obama has a draft inaugural address ready. ...

29. That blogger calls it "sloppy journalism," but...
...I think the NY Times journalists were just trying to have an angle to their story (that Podesta is so well-prepared for a Democratic presidency that he even knows what he'd like the inaugural speech to be like) and the journalists didn't expect the McCain campaign to take it literally.

35. Because it's not true, that's the only point --we don't need to defend it
it would play badly with voters, that's one big reason and secondly, the inaugural speech is NOT a priority now. nevertheless, Obama's team has been so good at setting priorities, there is no way in hell i would believe he's had staff working on such a speech.

"– The inaugural address was written and submitted to the publisher in March 2008, during a time when Podesta was supporting Sen. Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Podesta re-did the introduction to the book — but not the inaugural address — in June when it became clear that Obama would emerge as the nominee."

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/10/25/obama-speech/

i don't like us saying "so what if Obama did X" when Obama did NOT do X and when people (i.e. "voters") would not like it if Obama had done X.

got it?

Edited on Sat Oct-25-08 09:01 PM by ErinBerin84
(even though this "report" seems very sketchy) so fucking what...Obama likes to plan ahead for all possibilities. McCain would just wait until the night before, like with the Palin selection. And someone in GD-P reported a local Palin event in which she said that she screwed up the Couric interview because she was "thinking of more important things". How is that not presumptuous and narcissistic?

he would just talk about the issues of the country and not so much about Obama. He might not win, but he'd do better. He's just making himself look stupid.

25. The NY Times writers were trying to be funny,
...and some people took them literally.

They were trying to weave together that John Podesta is involved in the transition and that he wrote a book containing an example of what he thinks a good inaugural address would be.

Obama isn't going to read a speech from a book published this summer as his inaugural address.

26. Great response by Team Obama
Bill Burton, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, issued a statement saying: “While this charge is completely false and there is no draft of an inaugural address for Senator Obama, the last thing we need is a candidate like John McCain who just plans on re-reading George Bush’s.”

I love it...that comment was classic...and its funny...not sure if many of you have watched the daily show with jon stewart...but he had one show where Palin's speech was the exact same speech that Bush gave during the RNC convention in '04...she added a few more 'Mavericks' but it was dead on!

36. Yeah, my mother in law sent my husband this Yahoo news article
about how Obama has a transition team in place and she put all these nasty comments about how ARROGANT that is of him, but apparently she didn't read the whole article, because it mentioned McCain's transition team and how it's STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE to have a White House transition team this close to the election unless you are the incumbent.

I told her that. She's my mother in law, but she's dumber than a box of rocks, I swear. I can totally see her pouncing on this non-story too.

44. I don't get it...
What is the big deal...shouldn't they have a transition team in place...i mean that may be a big determining factor as to why we vote for either of them...The both hv to do research (well not in McCain's case)...to figure who would be best suited for the job...hell it took longer for my sister to hear from a company about her Director position...lol

Everybody going to Oscars has an acceptance speech ready just in case they win.

An inaugural address in these troubled times will need to be carefully crafted. I'd want to get a head start.
