Hows about the DU leading the way, fill "Toot"s home with Flowers?
Edited on Fri Oct-24-08 09:44 AM by symbolman
Who was the wonderful DU'r who put together the Roses delivery for the grand Lady of the Media, I think about a year ago? If the DU can raise over $100K, why not take some of that and start the ball rolling on the web, to give Back to Obama's wonderful "Toot", who gave us an Incredible American, and fill a room in her home with flowers, and well wishes?

C'mon folks, let's show the world how Love, Respect, and Admiration works! Let's let both Toot, Obama, & his family know how near and dear they are to our Democratic Hearts!

What's a few Dozen Roses, or twenty dozen delivered to her home when the DU family has donated over a $100 grand towards a future that will include spreading the Love? I've not seen an outpouring that's to scale for a woman who's passed on all American values to the man who may heal the planet, and fracture the hateful reign of the Neocons..

We ALL should be feeling Obama's pain, in a way we will all be the children and grandchildren of this woman who will undoubtedly touch the lives of generations to come!

Smother this woman's room in flowers, show the world that we CARE for our Own!

Give this thread a kick if you agree, maybe add some well wishes for "Toot" here :)

Do you remember who did the Helen Thomas gig with all the Roses?

Hell, I'm right her in Hawaii, be my pleasure to deliver them to her, along with some other DU'rs from here :)

19. TERRIFIC. That was the most difficult part of the Roses for Helen was getting deliveries coordinated
MAJOR kudos to those who gathered in DC for that!!

I'm up for this. Roses for Toots (matching funds donated to Obama?)

21. Was it You that coordinated that one? It was glorious :)
we don't have to overwhelm the nice lady I suppose, I guess she's only got a two bedroom home but Everyone likes flowers!

Obama's sister could pass them along if it was a problem, but I think it would let them all know how much we appreciate what SHE has done for us too!

How did you get everything in one pile? Create a Paypal account, "Roses for Toot"?

We've got a few other DU'rs in Hawaii besides me..

24. That's exactly what we did. People donated to paypal and then I ordered from
www.organicbouquet.com . Because we donated so much, they gave us a bulk discount but the disadvantage of that was that the roses needed to be cleaned and then arranged by volunteers (who have hearts of gold). If we could do smaller scale and not worry about a discount, they could arrive pre-arranged which would save so much trouble.

25. If you can set one up I'll push for it and can volunteer on this end..
There are at least two or three Hawaiian DUrs here, Opimoimoi is on Oahu, I'm on Maui, who else?

Maybe like you said, matching funds scene?

How can I help?

You did such an incredible job the last time! :)

31. Wow, so you can support a charity WHILE sending the flowers..
That's great! You've really done your homework, it's brilliant :)
What's the next step? I'm back in the saddle again, ready to do good between a house showing, recording studio gig, and a romp in the park with my lil' one - while I'm sure that "Toot" would probably just love to be able to cross the floor at home right now..

Glad that Obama's Sister is there to watch over her..

Look at all those choices, do they have to be cleaned and sorted?

Thanks

32. If we don't buy in bulk, no. They can send as shown and I think it's worth the extra money.
I have an email into the mods about them setting up a paypal account for this - we'll see if they're up to it. We also need an address.

5. Kicking for a great idea. If she is at home, she lives in a small
apartment. I think a nice bouquet and a contribution to the campaign are a great idea.

10. Might be a great way of presenting the DU money to honor HER?
Get the admins out here to present her with a load of flowers and a big check for her grandson, bet that would cheer her up, eh?!

7. I would think a dozen or two conveys more sentiment - "filling her house" I think would
be perceived as insincere and a waste of $$ she would rather have spent on O's campaign....

just my 2 cents.....

9. I think it's a great thought.. but filling her house might not be a good idea.
It may be over the top. Is there another way to honor her that wouldn't involve filling her house up? How about donations to something in her honor?

I think it's a nice idea.. but I think there is a reason why the campaign suggested Postcards.. because they don't take up any space. We also don't know if she has any conditions that would make her allergic or sensitive to flowers.

It IS Hawaii, and we can hang a beautiful Lei on Obama's Sister too, since she seems to be caring for her :)

17. Having just gone through this myself, I don't think it's the best idea
The last days of an elderly person's life are very difficult, and the need for a quiet, peaceful atmosphere is important. Yes, a pretty vase of flowers in the room ... but no to a profusion of flora from strangers. When we recently had hospice care for my husband's mother in her last days, the rule was soft music therapy, quiet visits (even unto silent hand-holding), dim lights. Frankly, she wouldn't have noticed the flowers anyway ... only the sound of her son's voice, and even then we weren't sure.

This seems like a personal moment for the family. I'm sort of feeling we should respect that. I know the intention is an excellent one, symbolman. I just have been there and disagree that it's a good idea.

20. I'm not sure how to go about it, ask my wife :)
and it's 5am here (just getting ready to get some sleep) .. Can someone kick this thread (rec it some more) and keep it going until we can figure something out?

I think it would be a great way for the DU to pass along the Large donation they've collected and cheer the lovely lady up at the same time, eh?

Donations somewhere in her name might be better.

36. Having been through the end with someone, this is probably too much. A donation in her honor
and a note would be much more manageable.
