But given the emotional peaks, the overt racism, the crowd baiting at McCain rallies "Who is Barack Obama?", the countless video posting where McCain supporters fear the "Black Man", it is surely not outside the realm of possibility. All of these incidents and many others e.g., Obama Food Stamps with racial slurs, make me suspicious. At the very least in this environment of negative characterizations of "Muslim", "Michelle hates America", "Communist", and "Socialist" it doesn't soothe an already inflamed republican electorate.

I think the interest here is really about trying to comprehend how far they will go and what will be the repercussions for our country. It is time we deal with this issue. Superficially, we put prejudice of all kinds to rest already but, realistically, there's no question that we need to go beyond the surface now and make the change real.
Focusing on situations like this helps illustrate how backward it is to persist in hating and/or discriminating. We're far behind much of the world on these kinds of things and by discrediting these kinds of people we help that backwardness seem more obvious. The people who are doing this are angry and desperate to prove that their way of thinking is right even though most have an underlying (probably subconscious) feeling of being hypocritical or just scared. Almost nobody would consciously equate hate with being positive. The more we tie hate with negative traits, like sick people doing sick things, the more like we are going to get people to reject hate.
For many/most of us here, it is hard to fathom that people still think like this and we feel compelled to analyze it, expose it for what it is, and eliminate it. Its just part of a process that actually helps us all progress as a nation.
