McCain Volunteer Was On 'The Wrong Side Of Pittsburgh.' Or Was She?
Snip>>

Despite the potential for confusion, Todd surely meant she was on the "wrong" side of town because it was the opposite of where she wanted to be, geographically. Not because she was scared of poors and so forth. Right?

Because Bloomington, where Todd was attacked, is described by a historian (cited on Wikipedia) as "a feast, as rich to the eyes as the homemade tortellini and cannoli in its shop windows are to the stomach." Judging from the ShoppingBloomfield.com website, that description sounds like it remains accurate to this day, what with the gourmet bistro, art gallery, antique store and farmer's market described therein.

Maps has a street-level panoramic picture of the intersection where the attack occurred (click the white arrows to move around). The ATM is across from a church and some nice-looking houses and next to a sport supplement store, clothing shop and Italian-themed cafe. Across the street is a Thai place. Doesn't look like too bad a neighborhood, but one never knows when and where crime might occur.

Although one would think the political revolutionary thugs would be more at home in, say, Philadelphia.

3. didn't look too bad in the news footage I just saw
I still think it smells fishy though. I've seen more than my share of fresh black eyes (had a few in my younger days), and worked in enough kitchens to know exactly what a knife wound looks like, and her face looked like it had neither. I could be wrong - sometimes weird things happen, but I've yet to see a black eye with zero swelling, or a knife cut with such a wide red mark, no actual cuts, and amazing accuracy on the curves of the B - you know how hard it is to cut a clean curve in something with a knife, much less a perfect B?

Try it when you're carving a pumpkin next week.

4. Bloomfield is not a bad place. Certainly not like some pockets of
Pgh. are. When we lived near there, we used to frequently go to Bloomfield for Italian food. They had some GREAT restaurants there. We were never afraid to go there at night for dinner or pizza. That's not to say there haven't been some crazies do same very bad things in areas where nothing like it was ever expected, but I don't think you could say it was a bad area of the city because it's definately not!

5. Very "walkable" area
Lots of little shops and restaurants - certainly not a place where anyone who lived or visited cities would feel threatened or uncomfortable.

9. Certainly not a spot where one could be mugged & beaten without witnesses at 8:45pm.
Lots of folks in those eateries and on those sidewalks
that time of evening.

11. Absolutely!
I just can't picture anything remotely like what she described happening there. We moved to Pittsburgh almost 2 years ago and looked (we thought) all over the city before settling on a house to buy. The first time we went to Bloomfield I was like "How did we miss this neighborhood when we were house hunting?" It's totally charming and definitely would have been on the top of our "desirable" list.

8. It's backwards
I just read an article someone linked to about this story where it's mentioned that the police confirmed the "B" is backwards.
