This isn't a "concern" thread. It's a "pity" thread. A "broken heart" thread. The fact that these yards are typically packed with a dozen or so identical McCain/Palin signs isn't an indicator of enthusiasm, it's an indicator of supply/demand issues. Oregon is Obama country.

It's just that every time I see one of these signs I just think of all the wasted potential.

It's like watching a nine-month pregnant woman slamming back a bottle of whiskey.

Or a teenage fatal car crash on prom night.

A puppy with cancer.

It's like Faces of Meth, but instead of mugshots, it's people's yards.

I think of all the decent normal people out there. A young family with maybe a kid or two who could do great if they could afford a house and a little property. Yet perfectly decent houses and property are occupied by these people. It's like a Lovecraft story. You take a wrong turn at a fork in the road and wind up in Inbredsburg. Some low lying swamp land occupied by degenerate, fallen families. The kind dogs uncannily bark, like Terminators or some shit.

Damn shame, damn shame.

1. I take it you have seen every single lawn in the State of Oregon?
Yes, then, that is disappointing.

2. Where at in Oregon? I drive I-5 between Portalnd and Eugene and see 99/1 for Obama stickers
And they are the most populated areas. Oregon is giving 7 EC votes to Obama, no question about it.

3. I also live in Oregon - I have seen 4 signs and 2 bumperstickers
for McHoover unlike the hundreds I have seen for Obama.

5. There's a small town near me I drove to that had McCain signs everywhere
Lake Mills, Wisconsin... town of about 5,000 people or so... the homes were usually sort of run down, sloppy and kind of tacky.

There also were many Obama yard signs as well. Nicely done gardens, cared-for homes, nice front yards and decent curb appeal...

6. I understand.
I think Fox "news" can be blamed for much of this, that and the liars on RW radio. With all the misinformation out there, it's amazing most houses don't have those signs.

7. Two of them really piss me off.
The a-hole that built his house up the hill from me decided to mark his turf by flanking the gravel public road that leads to his lot with two giant boulders. Last night I came home to find a McCain-Palin sign in front of each one. The boulders and the signs are several hundred yards off his property and right at the entry to my driveway. I finally calmed down when I decided to make a sign that I will erect in the wee hours of November 5.

Here it is:

8. I was shocked when I was up there 4 years ago.
We were in Beaverton and saw all these lawn signs saying "One Man, One Woman". Being from the Bay Area we couldn't figure out the signs at all at first. We were saying "Wouldn't it be easier to vote for these candidates if their *names* were on the signs?" Then it slowly dawned on us with horror what *all* these lawn signs were about. It was like a horror movie. You are right. Cute little condos, trim little lawns.

9. I have seen more and more McCain signs in surprising locations.
Like Tualatin. But it's possible that someone had stolen all the Obama signs the night before.

Oh well, they have to put up a valiant effort, since republicans have soured in Oregon, at least for most people.

10. FWIW it's coming out that there is a concerted effort to do this
It's McCain's new strategy - death by lawn signs. They are popping up all over the country and quickly too. My opinion is that it will have absolutely no effect whatsoever on the outcome of the election and as such I am inclined to let the campaign throw their money away on signs :)

23. Lawn signs are overrated, IMO.
They are not a good indicator. For example, anyone who knows me knows I'm an Obama supporter, but I have no yard sign, no bumper sticker.

I'm still going to carve an Obama logo on a pumpkin, though. :)

11. McCrazy Signs in Eugene - NOT
My neighborhood in south Eugene is filled with Obama signs and Piercy for Mayor signs. No McSenile signs around. I saw one Mc100YearsInIRaq bumpersticker in July at the Oregon Country Fair. It looked a little out of place :-}

I'm traveling down to California the day after the election to visit family; including my wingnut BIL who "knows" McDepends is going to win the election. I can't wait to see his head explode.

21. They are all over Thurston
My girlfriend's mom lives out there and last time I went out to visit I was amazed. However, on my way to and from, I saw wayyy more Obama stuff.

13. Fagidaboudit
They are getting desperate and McAilin's signs are going cheap.

Don't worry, Be happy.

My Rethug sister in KANSAS CITY went to the Obama rally at the War memorial 70,000
She said McAilin could only get 6,000.

Don't worry be happy.

Pity the fool.

14. Down here in Coos, its more like
30 to 1 for Obama, simply makes me smile...
And we are in a little redneck area mind you.
Have to add too that I know of 7 Obama/Biden signs that are handmade.

15. I live in Mass..and I see plenty of..
them. I always say 'idiot' when I drive past. They are mostly in wealthy neighborhoods. We don't have many signs at all around here, but I come across little clusters of them. Seems to be a battle of the signs going on.

16. I've seen quite a few McPhailin' signs
In Lake Oswego, which can be expected, but I've also seen them in Newberg. Of course, that area has a lot of Ron Paul signage as well. But the majority are for Obama.

19. Also...they are not necessarily indicative of vote..
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 05:09 PM by Stuart G
9th Congressional District..Illinois...where I live.
Jan Schakowsky..incumbent .Progressive Democrat.....has has very few lawn signs...yet she will win...

Last time..2006..Jan got 74 percent of the vote..for a total of 116,000
other guy....................................................39,000

New other guy...lots of lawn signs for several months...(at least near where I live)
...good luck to new other guy..
he too will lose by at least 50,000, 75,000.....perhaps 100,000.

20. I drive up and down Oregon a lot and see way more Obama stuff
Hell, today I was up in Portland and saw mostly Obama signs. I spend wayyyy too much time on I-5 (parents in Ashland, house in Corvallis, and family in Portland) so I can speak for most of the corridor that Obama stuff is much more prevalent.
