in the power of honest brokers to write watertight legislation. The problem is not a weakness of the legislative process, per se. It is the entrallment of the legislative process by money. I have further faith in the power of public scrutiny by a well informed electorate to encourage honest performance in office.
doesn't mean it's a done deal you're going to win.
Aren't there examples in history of those candidates being outspent who won anyway? I thought I read that on DU in the past.
It's all encompassing. Lots of cash helps deflect the lies and smears by the robots and gets Obama and Biden around on their planes but they have the facts and 8 years of bush nightmare to create The Perfect Storm.
9. Generally in an open contest, the candidate with more money wins
Incumbents almost always raises more money than the challenger unless the incumbent is ridiculously scandal plagued and has no chance of being re-elected or the challenger is extremely wealthy and self finances. So yes, candidates with less money do win but it tends to be against incumbents. In open contests, the guy with more money has a serious leg up.
6. I don't fault McCain for using taxpayer money, I support public financing
But that being said the US public financing system is broken and it was only a matter of time before a candidate stopped accepting it and I'm glad that it's our guy that is the first to benefit from the break.
What we need are spending limits and laws that require the TV stations to give the candidates inexpensive airtime to air their platforms rather than having voters rely on the news and 30 second soundbytes. They do this in most European countries and it makes it much more difficult for corporations and special interests to buy our government.
People need to realize that the money spent for public financing is a tiny fraction of a percent of the federal budget and would be well worth it if it actually prevented the billions of dollars in giveaways to corporations and special interests that basically write our laws in this country.
