rachel maddow - nytimes.com......!!!
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 09:43 AM by spanone

Fresh Face on Cable, Sharp Rise in Ratings

Rachel Maddow, a woman who does not own a television set, has done something that is virtually unheard of: she has doubled the audience for a cable news channel’s 9 p.m. hour in a matter of days.

More important for her bosses at MSNBC is that “The Rachel Maddow Show,” her left-leaning news and commentary program, has averaged a higher rating among 25- to 54-year-olds than “Larry King Live” on CNN for 13 of the 25 nights she has been host. While the average total audience of her program remains slightly smaller than that of Mr. King’s, Ms. Maddow, 35, has made MSNBC competitive in that time slot for the first time in a decade. The channel at that hour has an average viewership of 1.7 million since she started on Sept. 8, compared with 800,000 before.

Given that advertising dollars — and the reputations of networks — rise and fall on prime-time ratings, Ms. Maddow’s rise has been closely watched by media executives.

1. She is the best "pundit" on TV...
She is respectful of all of her guests who come on the show. Never cuts them off, even when they are Republicans spouting BS. Doesn't ever come across angry. She just has a ton of class. They could all learn a lot from her, including Keith.

2. K&R For My Favorite News Person Ever...
I'm still astounded that someone I started listening to 4 years ago is now a big star on TV. Rachel rocks.

3. You know what this story says to me?
Get rid of your TV. That way you can be rational, like Rachel.

Too bad I am so damn addicted to TV.

27. Pretty much what I've done too
I have a TV and do watch some shows but rarely watch television news. CNBC is on the background while I'm working but that's about it. It's just such garbage. I read at least 2-3 papers front-to-back each day (NYT, WSJ, FT) and a bunch of things online of course. Any good clips for the TV news shows will inevitably end up on the internet anyway.

5. You know what's weird about this article tho?
At least I thought so.

They refer to Susan as her companion as opposed to girl friend or partner? Isn't that a little archaic?

10. She is like a magnet!
The way she delivers the news is consise and intelligent. I can see why she's a hit with everyone, even her voice is attractive! Most everyone are just tired of people BSing their way thru everything. Rachel knows what's going on, you just can't fake that like poor Palin is trying to do... Rachel rocks.

There's a lot of stupid going around. No wonder people are watching.

It's like Obama- people like good stuff.

God, I'm not even awake. Everything makes sense to me, but I can't explain it.

16. She is so freaking smart! And quick!
She may not know absolutely everything, but she knows where to look to find it. She's been my favorite "pundit" for a long time and I'm happy to see her success; it's well-deserved.

Now, don't let it go to your head! LOL!

17. Yaaay! Go Rachel !! So glad she's getting great ratings.
Hearing that renews my faith.

Glad that even with the right wingers boycotting her show and not appearing, her ratings have actually made MSNBC competitive in the 9 pm EST time slot against Larry King !!

Yaaaay! Gives me hope that she will survive the RW boycott.

And renews my faith in the USA even.

18. Great piece, loved the end:
With Ms. Maddow delivering MSNBC a record audience, it might seem that the least the network could do would be to deliver her a television.

ha ha

She's the best, good for her. I'd rather she play it more to the vest but if it works, keep doing it.

She needs to get rid of the canned segment intros. When you watch her every night and hear the exact same opening lines for all her segments, it gets a little annoying.
