You hate Powell? So do I.

I hate the fact that he helped lead us into an illegal and immoral war in Iraq, but you know what I hate more? I hate that John McCain wants to keep our troops there for 100 years killing and torturing innocent people who will in turn hate us for generations to come.

I hate the fact that he propped up the bush* administration during the 2004 election, but you know what I would hate more? I would hate it if he was to help prop up the McCain campaign during the last two weeks of this election.

I hate the fact that he endorsed bush* over Gore in 2000 helping to usher in the last eight years of incompetence and greed, but you know what I would really, really hate? I would hate to see another four to eight years under McCain or, quite possibly, Sarah Palin.

Yes, I hate Powell's actions (and inactions) over the course of the last eight years but as so many have said here today, this isn't about me or you. It isn't about Barack Obama or John McCain. It's not even about Colin Powell. This is about the future of our country. It's about the future we want for our children. It's about the future of mankind.

So I'm going to swallow my pride for all of that and say thanks to Powell for doing the right thing, possibly for the first time in his life. I'm going to say thanks as well to Peggy Noonan, Micheal Schmerconish, David Brooks, Christopher Buckley, and every conservative newspaper that has endorsed Barack Obama for president. They have each put ideology behind them to support the man they feel is most qualified to lead this nation at perhaps it's most fragile moment.

Barack Obama is right that now is the time to stop fighting over the things we disagree on and come together on the things we do. If you believe in Obama you will join me in supporting his philosophy.

All these calls for rejecting Powell remind of someone watching a puppy go to the bathroom outside for the first time and then grabbing the poor thing and shoving his nose in an old pile of shit.

By the way, I was discussing the idea of the two parties yesterday. I see how we are playing a game of tug of war. Think of all the effort that goes nowhere, when if we werre all pulling in the same direction we would be accomplishing so much.

Obama? I read Brooks' recent column in the NY Times on Obama. It was far from an endorsement. It was a tease, and at the end he gave Obama a little slap.
Noonan? All I've heard is that she was lukewarm on McCain.

However, the real answer is yes, I would feel the same. I'm not suggesting that Powell be excused for his previous actions or that he should not be held liable for any criminal wrongdoing on his part. I'm thanking him for putting his country before his ideology. It's that simple.

Once again, we have to work together to create this change Obama's talking about. We can't do it alone.
