Like, not at all. I think her campaign handlers told her to appear... she is not of the mental capacity to handle criticism well, to say the least. Even if it's satire.

2. I dunno, I think she was loving it.
I watched it a couple of times now and from what I saw in her body language and facial expressions, she was having a good time. She was groovin' along with the rap, even singing along with the "Ayers" line.

My theory is that she just loves the attention and is such a dimbulb, she didn't realize that they were all making fun of her. I really think she's that dense.

The part I didn't get was the goat or llama standing behind her and Alec Baldwin at the beginning. When they walked off, there it was... the ass of a goat or whatever it was.

46. Not since Imus skewered Clinton has there been that much tension
Remember when Don Imus told a bunch of Lewinsky jokes at an event while Bill and Hillary Clinton were sitting not ten feet away from him? This skit did surpass that for the awkwardness. But I do think SNL threw Palin a few bones--Baldwin came off as less than genuine when he quickly backtracked after he discovered he was speaking to the real Palin and not Fey.

She looked very uncomfortable is most of them. The only time she didn't look uncomfortable was during the rap song, and probably because she didn't know they were making fun of her.

9. Bottom line with Palin is that she loves being the center of attention
just like 10-year-old kid addicted to negative behavior - anything to be the one in the spotlight.

That's why she is so willing to spew her rhetoric and utter lies even though she claims to be a Uber-Christian - it gives her a chance to be a little girl twirling in the middle of the room with her skirt spinning outward as mommy and daddy clap their hands and giggle at how precious she is.

Don't think anyone else would have her, 'cept Limbaugh, but she'd rather be on TeeVee where everyone can get a look at her.

LOL, reminds me of the quip Keith Olbermann enjoys reading of RWer's love of Palin as she winked on TV and the guy just knew the wink was meant just for him ... ah, it must be love

Witness her pageant and broadcasting background.

I do think, however, that she is unused to being the center of negative attention, and it truly confounds her when people don't fawn all over her.

She knows she'll be the talk of the town for doing that show. The pundits will say the first positive things about her they've said since her speech to the RNC.

20. Got to agree with you
At the risk of sounding sacreligious, I enjoyed the whole concept of having her in the SNL skits while at the same time they were satirizing her.

And I think you're right---probably her motive for doing this was to able to have people say she was a "good sport"---some positive feedback which she's been sorely lacking for good reason.

She looked more natural than the cast members who were in the skits with her (except for Amy Poehler--she was hilarious), who read their lines off cue cards.

I don't want her as President any more than I did yesterday, but she did a very good job in a difficult situation.

13. Exactly.
Former beauty queen runner-up who wants the big spotlight to finally land on her. But I also agree with an earlier poster who pointed out she didn't realize they were making fun of her. I thought Alec Baldwin nailed it with the 'hot' thing - that bit, very effectively, points out the real reason Repukes are 'in love' with Palin. And if anyone looked like they didn't want to be there, I thought it was Alec.

21. If you watch her you know she always looks like she's enjoying herself. Always
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 01:30 AM by lunatica
She couldn't have looked more bubbly and tickled than when Katie Couric was skewering her with the pesky questions about names of newspapers, but you know it bothered her because she claimed Katie 'irritated' her during the interview. Then she looked happy, happy, happy to be at the debates, but she did nothing but break all the rules because if she followed them she would look like an idiot. She knew that.

Then when she thought the people in the back of one of her rallies were booing her when in actuality they were shouting for her to speak louder she smiled like they were throwing flowers at her. Then she came up with what she thought was a great put down about hoping they appreciated the soldiers who are dying so they can have free speech. Even after Todd leaned over to tell her what they were really saying she didn't stop smiling. She never misses a beat with that smiling.

And no, she didn't look all that happy. In the SNL skit she tried, but didn't quite pull off the I'm just he bubbliest darn cutest set of white teeth flashing atcha, gosh darn gal thing she does.

I loved it when Alec Baldwin mistook her for Tina Fey and ranted about Palin to her face. I also liked Alaska Rap, but Palin herself was underwhelming. In contrast, Hillary Clinton paired with Amy Poeler was funny and I'm no Hillary Clinton fan.

29. Even though she wanted to be there, I don't think it went the way she expected
By the time she found out she would not be doing a skit where she gets the best of Tina Fey - the kind of sketch you just know she was envisioning - it was too late to back out without looking like a coward.

I liked that there was no exchange at all between the two women. Wanna bet that when the behind-the-scenes stories come out, we'll learn that Fey refused to be ridiculed by Palin?

I only saw the opening bit, which I thought was weak and forced. And what woman in her right mind would pick Stephen Baldwin over Alec? Never mind...I just answered my own question.

35. Good summary. Yeah, I really don't see NBC or SNL allowing their star actress ...
... to be put down by this phony from Alaska. As you say, I don't think Palin or her campaign were able to get from this appearance what they were looking for, but couldn't back out.

She looked stiff throughout, and pretty ridiculous during the rap sketch, sitting there chair dancing and doing the "roof" thing with her hands. SO very undignified.

My favorite line from the rap song, though, may have been... "We're so hot we need a go-between." Was this a subtle reference to the rumors of an affair between Palin and her husband's business partner? If so, Ouch!

30. Palin delivered her lines rather flatly during the show.
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 02:31 AM by political_Dem
The jury is out whether she wanted to be there or not. But she does not know how to act. I also believe that they solely gave her lines to deliver and that was that.

The only thing she knows how to do well is to repeat the lines that people give her.

However, I have to say that the "Alaska Rap" was very funny. Amy Poehler was hilarious, especially when she shot the Moose. I don't think Sarah found that funny though from the look on her face.

31. It was essentially a non-appearance
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 02:35 AM by Awsi Dooger
I just watched it in the West and can't believe there were so many threads and comments. They eliminated the Fey/Palin confrontation, which seemed like a natural. Instead it was a flash walk by, barely captured on camera.

The Weekend Update skit would have been great if Palin did it herself. I can't believe she didn't insist on doing it, regardless of the words. She would have been a huge hit. She sat there and was basically irrelevant.

I guess the media will highlight her segment with Baldwin, which should have been much funnier. I wonder if he acted so stiff, and poorly, on purpose? If I didn't know better, she looked like the trained actor, not him.

45. I'm guessing that Fey didn't want a side-byside with her
Fey wants to "leave the Earth" if Mccain-Palin win, and would wnat nothing to do with making Palin funny or likable. My guess is that privately Fey put her foot down, and she does basically "own" the show these days.

Looks like Sarah specifically mentioned Stephen because he has become a far right-wing Christian Conservative.

47. I posted this on another Palin on SNL thread, and I believe it to be true:
I think she so craves the spotlight that the idea of being a "star" was too appealing to her. She got to be on a popular national show, and a movie star said to her, "You're much hotter in person." I think that to someone as shallow as Sarah Palin, that made the whole thing worth it. She just wants to be looked at and told she is hot, especially as she gets older and can't enter beauty pageants any more. To her, this is just another beauty pageant opportunity. She got that from SNL last night, and the political ramifications don't matter as much to her.

Also, she might be guessing that they will lose this election, and be hoping for a TV spot on FOX when her political career is over. I suspect she would have preferred to be a TV star or a movie star anyway, and that politics was where she went when her original plan didn't work out. Now she gets to go in front of adoring fans at rallies and get told how terrific she is, and she even gets to be on SNL in front of the whole nation and be told how hot she is.

For Palin, there is no downside to this. Even if her political career is over (which I wouldn't count on), she now has a national fan base among the wingnuts, and she is no longer confined to Alaska. She will also end up making a lot more money now.

I was worried they'd go too easy on her, but they didn't really pull any punches. I think they really dislike her. It's apparent that even an attempt at being nice had to contain a few barbs, and I was loving every uncomfortable moment of it.

61. Is this just speculation on your part or something you read somewhere?
My guess is that being on SNL has been on of her life's ambitions.

63. Best thing you can do is laugh at yourself.. SNL is the first to tell controversial guests this
Make light of it and have fun, it boosts public opinion. However, Palin seemed way to on edge to do this.

64. She added nothing
Falin barely had any lines. Basically a prop who sat back as they crushed her. Would be uncomfortable to most but not sure if she had a clue what was going on. My take is McCain handlers said 'you have to go on SNL' and whatever happens, happens. Take a shot. I think it was a net wash. She got some air time but had no substance as usual.

66. For all their Hollywood bashing, Republicans love them celebrities
I mean, they elect so many of them - Reagan, Arnold, Sonny Bono, Fred Thompson, etc.

67. "none too happy to be on SNL tonight." I thought she looked fairly happy, what with her "hand-
pushes" to the rap!
