McCain's best bet is to...
allow himself and Palin to run completely different campaigns.

Palin can continue to appeal to the insane with her racism and terrorism, and McCain can attempt to appeal to the "moderates" who haven't yet figured out how crazy he is.

I think the Palin supporters are stupid enough to convince themselves that a vote for Palin is actually a protest vote against McCain.

And the McCain supporters are stupid enough to convince themselves that McCain is the one setting the agenda for the Republicans.

Palin will step up the rhetoric while McCain, pretending that Palin no longer exists, will oddly enough run towards the "middle."
