A guy with a trash moustache, driving an SUV, with one of those inane "W" stickers, and a sticker of Calvin pissing on Jeff Gordon's number.

Call it Asshole Profiling, I guess.

15. The bumper sticker is a giveaway.
I remember protesting the war, though, five years ago and remarking to myself that the big fuckin' trucks flying the american flag were not necessarily in support of the shrub. It was an eye opener, but my experience may not generalize well.

32. Get rid of the stickers and you might be seeing my husband.
My fiercely *liberal* husband. Well, he has a big pickup truck not an SUV, but still, he could be easily mistaken for a flaming RWer by these standards.

(By the way, he's in the process of purchasing a 40mpg car for daily driving. We'll keep the truck for farm chores and occasional 4x4 adventures.)

11. For some of us, we run low on options.
I haven't shaved mine yet, but nature's getting it pretty low around the edges. Eventually it will either be shaved or scraggly.

I'm not big on the bearded chin/shaved head look, though. Seems like it should be all or nothing.

43. Some of us do it because haircuts
are not in our budget. For about the same price as a haircut you can buy an electric clipper that will last 10+ years. It saves on shampoo too.

a couple times a year, especially when it's hot. He works outdoors and wears a construction helmet with one of those cloth caps on his head. The rest of the time his hair is very short, all he has to do is use clippers to keep it neat. He is also a Dem.

I happen to be glad that people are finally taking that style back from the neo-Nazis. As long as normal white guys are so afraid of that hair style that they'll let their horseshoe grow out instead, the neo-Nazis will continue to own it.

23. This is one of the most idiotic things I've heard
Unfortunately, its also tends to be true. I shaved my head completely once, and yes, people seemed to think i was some sort of skin head, which isn't the helped by the fact that I'm tall, lily white, blue eyed, and of Germanic decent. So instead of shaving it all off, i went with more of just a buzz, and I think i only ever got asked once since if i was a neo nazi, so i guess that's an improvement.

But if some people wanna think I'm some big scary racist just because I like not having to manage my hair, that's fine. I'm really just a big ol teddy bear, even if i might look scary on occasion (though less so since i started wearing glasses), but sometimes folks just can't help but judge books by their cover.

24. Look, I'm just going by personal experience.
And I've had my share with his type. Sorry you so strongly disagree, but a lot of it goes along with what the person in question is wearing, and the way they carry themselves. We obviously don't share the same experience, but I mostly call them as I see them.

I'm certain if I saw you walking through the local Stop & Shop with your chosen look I would not think you were "some big scary racist". And if this is one of the most idiotic things you've ever heard, you should get out more, spend more time talking with idiots perhaps.

And really, if you feel persecuted somehow for shaving your head, wear a hat.

52. One of my old bosses shaved his head every morning....
... I was the only soul in the building all night, he'd come in at 4 or 5 in the morning, go into his office, pour his bowl of vitamins (literally, his daily vitamin load filled up one of the plastic bowls you got with a tiny box of cereal at school), and run the batter-powered trimmer over his head.

He said it was so he didn't pull out any more of his hair dealing with the idiotic techs we had.

While my hair didn't suffer at that job, I could see his point. (He is probably Republican, but he makes well over $250k, so I can kind of see why he would be even if I disagree with him.)

28. I've noticed that most of the guys I meet with shaved heads do it because they want to hide their
male pattern baldness. To have hair and a big receding hairline or bald spot would make them look worse, to them.

Me, I'm a long-haired guy with no bald spot and only a slightly receding hairline even at 39 years old. Thanks dad and grandpa!

Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 03:33 AM by backscatter712
I do have a bit of a receding hairline myself, and if it gets too much thinner, I'm likely to go for the shave-the-head route rather than the Donald Trump/John McCain bad combover route.

If you're gonna be bald, might as well look good bald.

Either that or buzz it relatively short, and style it so it looks decent with the receding hairline.

Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 04:46 AM by CarbonDate
I always saw it as accepting and embracing it. Now I just lump the hair on my head in with my facial hair, except that I can still grow a full beard; I don't have a full head of hair.

Honestly, the shaved heads are becoming a lot more acceptable on white guys, and the stereotypes I'm seeing thrown around on this thread are just displaying a lot of ignorance, IMO.

53. Well said...
I buzz mine down to 1/8" every Sunday morning, because there's not much growing there anymore. It's clean, easy to care for, and certainly looks better than growing it long to try to hide the "solar panel" on the back of my head.

I've read that both the full beard and the loss of head hair are a result of high testosterone levels.

Some of my best friends have short hair. We even have had a family of short-haired people move into our neighborhood recently. They are a credit to their lack of hair style. I try to point out in conversations with them that they are just as good as normal people, kind of, anyhow.

I'm not sure of how I'd react if one of my daughters were to date a short-haired boy.

61. It looks far better than a comb-over...
and it's easy and cheap to keep your hair buzzed short or shaved. Plus, down here in FL it's a lot cooler in the heat and humidity than having hair.

I think it applies to the person, not via the broad brush you're using this morning.

I am "white", am follicly-challenged and shave my head a few times a week. This is not a "mullet" but rather working with limited options available to me - either that or be a fraud and have a combover.

On edit - I am so "liberal" that if I were any further "left" I would start coming back around to the right.

66. NO NO NO!
My wonderfully fabulous husband is a white guy with a "skin head". He's the biggest Dem I know! He just happend to have the mis-fortune of inheriting the "I started losing my hair when I was 25, and when I was 31 I looked like I was 50 because my hair had receeded so far". Now at age 35.. he looks great!

Take a look for yourself:

Joe the plumber might be an idiot.. but it's not because he chooses to shave his head. It's what's INSIDE his head that causes the problems. ;)

72. Depends on the motivation for shaving it
Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 09:29 AM by DS1
If it's solely to look tough like Steve Austin or Vic Mackey, then you're pretty much a douchebag. If the style just fits, then great, go with it. If you're hiding a bald pattern, also fine, go with it. If you're a professional fighter and short/no hair helps, fine.

75. I know a guy who does this.
Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 09:48 AM by turtlensue
And he looks really good, IMHO. He does it cause it looks better than balding greying hair.
Some guys can do it. I think its more about the attitude than the skin color though. If you carry yourself with confidence than of course you can pull it off.

76. 21st century? Shaved heads have been around as long as civilization.
It's an easy hairdo. It's also really good if you have scalp issues.

Plus I think shaved heads look great. The form of the human skull is beautiful.

82. Some guys would rather do that than have pattern baldness...
...especially if lost of hair is really pronounced.

I still think the mullet is the mullet of the 21st century.

83. I've thought about shaving my head
but the ol' noggin is a little bumpy and from certain angles my ears look kind of pointed. Thanks to those things and my pasty complexion I'd probably look like a paunchy version of Nosferatu, and I'm just gonna go ahead and assume that nobody wants to see that. :P
