McCain was a douchebag before he was a POW; he was a douchebag after he was POW; he was a douchebag when the Keatin 5 scandal hit, and he had enough brains and talent to hide his true nature and try to come off as a reformer by offering up essentially toothless legislation supposedly designed to stop the kind of abuses he took part in. That new image worked for him, and he kept at it until it was no longer working for him, and he let his true nature shine through when it became apparent that he wasn't going to be given the presidency on a silver platter.

Whatever humorous things he's saying right now were written for him by pros, and he's dropped back into his nice-guy role to deliver them.
