How to win without California in 5 easy steps
Just to break the monotony of the vicious attacks against our wonderful candidates, and to cheer anyone who is in a pessimistic mood up...

Let's assume that something terrible happens. The Democrats lose California. GASP. Wave goodbye to those 54 electoral votes. Are our chances at pulling out the presidency utterly and irretrievably lost?

No, it is still possible (though quite difficult).

1) Hold all the Gore States except California.

2) Add Nevada (Yucca Mountain)

3) Add Ohio and West Virginia (it's the jobs, stupid)

4) Add Florida (let's say Graham is VP, or something else good happens in FL)

5) A number of options (pick one):
A) Add Louisiana
B) Add Missouri
C) Add Arkansas and any state
D) Add New Hampshire and any state with more than 3 electoral votes
E) Win any other state with more than 7 electoral votes

1. Maria Shriver(traitor) could do it.
Good back up plan. Point's out how close we are to victory.

2. There's lots of ways to add up numbers...
but I doubt sincerely that Bush will carry California.

I've lived here for 20 years... it's not gonna happen.

3. Don't forget,
Byrd will be doing some serious stumping for the Demo candidate, and he's built up some political currency (yes, even in that state) for his vehement opposition to the war.

4. Excellent
Has he said anything about campaigning for the nominee in WV that I haven't heard about? Kewl.

8. Actually, I should have edited that
I misused "stumping" badly...I'm tired. My point was that he will be a rallying point for the Democrats in that state, as he opposed the war (and the Bush admin. in general) with such a loud voice. Sorry for the misinfo.

5. If we lost CA..
then there's something fundamentally wrong with the campaign, but any of the candidates should be able to carry it EASILY.

Still good to know that all is not lost w/o though.

I say let's get CA AND all those other states you mentioned. ;)

6. If Bush wins California...
expect the 'Big One', the enormous earthquake that sends everything east of the Rocky Mountains sinking into the Atlantic.
Ain't gonna happen. California votes for Moderate Repukes (and those who pretend to be) and Democrats (all stripes). We invented spin here. Bush can't spin it that much. His best bet is to have the Supreme Court declare the California electoral votes 'disallowed', because he ain't gonna win them.

13. Add another reason for NV:
the Latino/Hispanic community.

Las Vegas (Clark County!) tends to go Dem - but the 2nd largest (Reno area, in Washoe) has almost 1/3 Latino/Hispanic population.

I think that, once Wes Clark's message gets out there, the votes for NV can go Dem.

Yucca Mountain is a toughie - because people here have a sense that it's ultimately a done deal. But that is also the wedge: the sense of having it shoved down "either way" may tick off enough conservatives to add to our hopes here.
