McCain's attempt to calm his crowds reminds me of Eric Cartman...
In the "Ginger kids" episode. For those who haven't seen it, Cartman decided to create fear & hatred of red-haired, freckled kids. Kyle decided to give him a taste of his own medicine by bleaching his skin & dying his hair while he slept. Cartman responded by forming a new hate group comprised of "Gingers", and stoking them to a near-fever-pitch. Just when they were about to start dropping all the other kids into a lava pit, Kyle told Cartman the truth about how he wasn't really a "Ginger". Then Cartman had to do an about-face and try to calm down his crowd of angry "Gingers". But they weren't buying it.

It's hard to settle down a crowd when you've gotten them all riled up and then tell them the exact opposite of what you've been saying (either directly or indirectly).
