He apparently talked McCain down from picking Lieberman with the argument that you can't win without the base. If you want to win the the Base go with Sarah Palin. Well she has excited the base just fine.... but they have lost 80% of the middle in the process.

People in the middle think she is either not read, incompetent or just plain mean-spirited. No wonder Buchanan likes her so much.

In the last 2 election cycles, the GOP strategy was to rev up the base, by scaring them about the democrat and figure that that they could use wedges to get enough of the middle in enough swing states to win. But look now what Rove has wrought. Palin's elevation combined with economic calamity and erratic responses from McCain has exposed the deep fissures in the Republican Party, They are now trying to make this into a "base election" the problem is there has been a demographic shift, a crap economy and Palin has solidified one part of the base and scared the crap out of the other.

This is why Obama is ahead in all the Swing states and has a real chance of winning in North Carolina and Indiana...and now WV and Georgia.

If Obama can convince cocktail sipping fiscal conservatives who don't care about abortion that he is competent to lead the forward, he could be on his way to a near 400 EV win!
