National Review: Obama will kill scientific research in biology because it will prove white
superiority. And this isn't in wingnut daily or newsmax. it's in what is considered to be the most intellectual and respectable right wing journal. Of course it's a repulsive reactionary rag, but its rep is that it's the thinking conservative's journal.

Racist fucking pigs. I hope they all choke and have apoplectic fits on November 4.

"Will Obama kill science?"

3. According to this DNA study that National Geographics is doing
"DNA studies suggest that all humans today descend from a group of African ancestors who—about 60,000 years ago—began a remarkable journey."

We are ONE people and science will prove it! I'm sure this would make HER head explode.

Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 05:39 AM by quantass
..and National Geographic is one of the people that already knew that. Havent checked the article yet but i find that if they are putting in funds to discover what they've already known by scientific reports numbering in the thousands, if not millions (several by even National Geographic), then they are using donated funds very poorly and those in control should be fired. Let's get some advancement in science and not tred on old territory like testing the effects of gravity on screws in space.

I guess they choose NOT to listen to Obama's speeches where he SAYS he wants our to children learn more about Science and Math to keep up in the world. In hopes that they will have a brighter future and keep create jobs here in America.

I'm guessing they ARE to "superior" to listen to a Black man.

To my mind superiority comes through humbleness kindness and generosity, which they might well be lacking. We should more ridicule their small mindedness than give it any credibility, they are being small people who are not reaching for everything that, if there is a god, he enabled us to be.

Grab a fucking clue: This post is indicative of something roiling in American culture. And if calling it out is what you think race baiting is, you really are hopelessly clueless.

33. What cracks me up is their use of language....
Since dubya, and now with Palin, it's preferred to be ignorant and to at least sound uneducated to be a favorite of the wingnuts. Joe six pack and all.

If you speak properly and pronounce words correctly, it's elitist...liberal elite. And, they are trying to make the word "liberal" translate to "terrorist."

What's so damn ironic is that they claim white superiority and that our country has been degraded due to the ignorance and inability to educate anyone NOT white...yet they're the ones promoting and fostering intellectual ignorance.

The thought process of the crazies never ceases to amaze me.

The neocons/theocons have turned everything upside down and their followers are clueless. Give 'em a talking point for the day and let them run with it; heaven forbid they ever have an independent, coherent thought.

Dangerous shit, IMO.

54. Where to start?
Obama will be more intelligent than any Republican president ever. So they are bringing up this race-based intelligence stuff to try to hint that the two bozos on their ticket are really the smart ones.

This idea that because of his racial background, a candidate would support one approach to science or another is one that became famous when Germany rejected "Jew science".

Finally, we've got their whole repetition of the faulty Bell Curve argument and related articles. They selectively list several articles by these types, and ignore the vast SCIENTIFIC literature rejecting the "Bell Curve" conclusions and even the logic of its arguments.

I think they've gotten their marching orders for racial agitation. And they're only following orders. Shameful.

55. Obama's IQ > McSame + Palin
Seriously, Obama is clearly one of the most intelligent folks to run for president. McCain and Palin have demonstrated that they have little intelligence. Palin has less knowledge of national security, economics, and science than most of people posting on this forum. McCain can't remember his own statements from one day to the next. If someone had come out of a time capsule and listened to the statements by either of the Repub candidates then listened to statements by Obama, they'd overwhelmingly agree that Barack Obama is much more intelligent than those idiots. That flies right against the premise of this idiotic article.

Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 09:55 AM by nam78_two
NRO please go FUCK yourselves. I am a scientist and there are reasons for the fact that 75-85% of scientists vote Democratic and are contemptuous and suspicious of Republicons.

Please don't even go there assholes. Last week at a department retreat our chair actually said and I was even surprised that he was so open about in front of so many people that we are seeing the most anti-science administration he has ever seen come to a close. Who cuts funding for stem cell research? Which party has lied about climate change? Who has tried to pull up a few hacks funded by petro-dollars as evidence of there being tons of evidence to indicate that climate change has nothing to do with human activity? A lie so patent even they are having to back-track now? Who wants creationism and ID taught in schools? Whose administration tried to cover up research indicating that hurricane strength is tied to climate change.
I wish I had an NIH chart I have seen before available to post here-it shows so clearly how science funding in general drops significantly under most Repube admins.

I can't believe that they want us to believe that that dim-wit from Alaska who thinks the Flinstones were reality and that other guy she is running with are the friends of science in this race :eyes:.

Republicans are the friends of science-GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK. Just hearing that lie incenses me-most of us in the sciences are so worried about the future of research in this country under a Palin administration we are thinking of moving to Canada or Europe if that happens.

Finally scientists have great respect for reality and facts -two things the present day Republicon party looks on as foes. Please....I mean please....:eyes:.
Most groups affiliated with science and scientists have already endorsed Obama. Many nobel laureates have-these people are seriously delusional.

Edit: I even missed the white superiority part in your post the first time. Quite right-the kind of "science" these pigs are interested in is probably of the Phrenology and Eugenics variety.

72. The irony, of course...
is that this comes from the same crowd that wants to ban the teaching of evolution.

Goebbels would be proud.

73. Wow. How totally untrue and blatantly racist.
I shudder to think the depths the racist right wing will sink to if Obama wins November 4.

77. Articles like this impede progress in medical genetics that has so much potential. Already hundreds
of hereditary disorders have been identified that are gene specific. Mothers can choose prenatal tests to make informed decisions regarding whether to continue a pregnancy.

Obviously that has all sorts of moral dimensions but that's just the way it is.

78. Here is a rebuttal.
In an incoherent leap of bad logic, John Derbyshire over at the National Review (I know – why did I even bother reading it?) has come to the conclusion that an Obama Administration will kill science (his article title: “Will Obama Kill Science?”).

However, upon reading his incredibly ridiculous argument, it becomes clear that he only thinks Obama will kill one aspect of science: the science that he believes will eventually, inevitably prove that some races are better and smarter than others.

Why does he think this? It’s not clear. His only real argument is that Obama once wrote a piece for NPR in which he criticized someone for wanting to package racism in science.

92. Thanks so much to you and cali for these articles
This is definitely one of the most interesting complaints against an Obama presidency I've seen yet. :)

Reading the National Review article, the author only (smartly) alluded to the fact that Obama will kill biology. But at the end when he says something to the effect that "because Obama's a cultural Marxist, he will be more interested in multiculturalism instead of truth" belies the man's real point.

The absolutely DEPTHS that people will sink to deny or explain their own racism and prejudice is astounding.

81. at the very basic level
genetics can't prove race exists. If all of the humans on Earth died but the aborigines 90 % of the variance would survive. The features that humans focus on as vastly important racial differences are simply not important at genetic level. So scientifically this person is so, so wrong it's not funny.

84. Are they fucking kidding?!?
Bush has been the worst president in HISTORY for support of science. He doesn't believe in science, he's a "faith based" moran. The racist inference that Obama would somehow support a "blacks only" type science program is so insulting and patently ignorant as to defy adequate description. Bush has been a travesty with regards to science, Obama will be a spring breeze in comparison. Piss on Republiscum, they are nothing but dirt and should be treated as such.

87. Note the blatant sexist footnote to the artical
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 12:26 PM by gypsylud
he must gleefully cite!

When “Godless” was helping me get up to speed on this stuff, I asked him at one point: “What’s the difference between a geneticist and a genomicist?” He gave a very cute answer: “Geneticists are female, genomicists are male.” Asked to elaborate, he offered this: “Imagine you are walking down a corridor in a research institute, looking in through the glass panels in doors. In one lab you see a young woman of nontrivial attractiveness carefully adding drops to a Petri dish from a pipette. That’s a geneticist. A couple of doors along you look into another lab and there are two young guys arguing about some long string of numbers displayed on a computer screen. Those are genomicists …”

88. Man, we are living in seriously scary times!
Reading this makes me want to cry, get angry, and scared all at once--hard to prioritize my feelings because this bullshit was settled long ago, but I suppose when right-wingers set up their own schools and colleges to teach their own sick, warped view of the world, the bigotry gets perpetuated.

90. The moron who wrote this is a willing tool of a supposed scientist with an agenda.
Proof is at the very end of the article, in a footnote, which I'll quote here: "When 'Godless' was helping me get up to speed on this stuff, I asked him at one point: 'What's the difference between a geneticist and a genomicist?' He gave a very cute answer: 'Geneticists are female, genomicists are male.' Asked to elaborate, he offered this: 'Imagine you are walking down a corridor in a research institute, looking in through the glass panels in doors. In one lab you see a young woman of nontrivial attractiveness carefully adding drops to a Petri dish from a pipette. That’s a geneticist. A couple of doors along you look into another lab and there are two young guys arguing about some long string of numbers displayed on a computer screen. Those are genomicists...'"

So this article is just the layering of right-wing political idiocy over some individual scientist's racism and sexism. Fuck this article, it's trash through and through.

94. Just wondering...is this 2008 America or 1938 Germany?
Because from where I AM standing, I'm failing to see a lot of difference.

OF course, these NRO guys represent some of the Republican intelligencia, whose thought patterns best resemble schoolyard bullies.
"What's mine is mine what's yours iz(sic) mine and you can't have any because you're not like me! Hahaha, haha, ha ha!"

Even with the 700 billion dollar bailout looming I hope President Obama finds a way to increase science funding to put these false notions to bed at rest.

Will Obama Kill Science?
The unasked question.

By John Derbyshire

No, Mr. Derbyshit, I have your unasked question: If white Republicans are so smart, then why is McCain's ancient unstable ass at the top of their ticket? :dunce:
