GA POLL: Obama within single digits of McCrypt (54/45).
Election 2008: Georgia Presidential Election
McCain 54%, Obama 45% in Georgia
Wednesday, October 08, 2008 Email to a Friend
While his numbers may be souring in much of the country, John McCain is still strongly ahead of Barack Obama in Georgia, 54% to 45%, in the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of voters in the state.

In August, McCain led Obama 54% to 43%.

Nationally, Obama has been gaining ground steadily in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll ever since the Wall Street debacle began to dominate the news.

In Georgia, McCain has the support of 92% of Republicans and five percent (5%) of Democrats. Obama is backed by 94% of Democratic voters and seven percent (7%) of Republicans. McCain has a 25-point lead among unaffiliated voters.

Men prefer McCain to Obama 62% to 38%, while women, as in much of the country, give the edge to Obama 51% to 46%.

A stunning 99% of the African-American vote goes to Obama, the first black presidential candidate of a major U.S. political party, along with 28% of the white vote. Seventy percent (70%) of whites support McCain.

George W. Bush carried Georgia by double digits in 2000 and 2004. Bill Clinton won the state in 1992 but lost it to Bob Dole in 1996. Rasmussen Markets data gives McCain a 81.0% chance of winning Georgia’s 15 Electoral College votes this fall. At the time this poll was released, Georgia was rated as “Likely Republican” in the Rasmussen Reports Balance of Power Calculator. NOTE: Factors other than the latest Rasmussen Reports poll impact the Balance of Power ratings. The current status is indicated on the table in the upper right hand corner of this article.

1. I'm a GA voter and O's support here is very noticeable. Yes, McSame has his faithful,
but make no mistake about it, it will be a real race this election in GA. And there's a real chance that Saxby Chambliss may lose his seat to Jim Martin.

3. Disappointing
I know we aren't "supposed" to win GA, but I was hoping Obama would snag an "unlikely" state like GA, TX, TN, WV. We need to win as much as possible, and seeing things like this is really disappointing.

4. don't give up so easily. My belief, is that there is a stealth vote in GA just like in many other
states this year. The AA vote paired with young and first-time voters may just do it for Obama. I will not give up on GA. And if by chance we dont make it, GA will be more purple than it has ever been in my lifetime.

5. unfortunately, our secretary of state is playing games with newly registered voters
Edited on Wed Oct-08-08 06:56 PM by CatWoman
and if Obama is to pull this off, it will be due largely to newly-registered voters:

Letter to new voters called confusing

Georgians who mailed voter registration applications to their county registrars are receiving letters telling them they must send in proof of identification or risk having their ballots challenged on Election Day.

But the letters overstate a new federal law designed to make it easier for Americans to register and vote, say election protection watchdogs and the Barack Obama campaign. The Secretary of State’s Office disagrees, saying the letters simply outline the federal law.

That law, the Help America Vote Act, says voters registering for the first time must show identification either at the time of registration or at the polls on Election Day.

But letters sent by registrars, a form letter provided to them by the Secretary of State, suggests that Georgians must submit identification immediately, a problem some critics fear could cause confusion at the polls, dampen turnout or cause votes not to be counted.

“It’s ambiguous and unclear,” said Dawn Jones, a lawyer with the Georgia chapter of Election Protection, a nonpartisan national organization. “We’re trying to help clean up any confusion that keeps people from exercising their right to vote.”

The federal law is separate from Georgia law that requires voters to show valid photo identification at the polls. The laws’ similarities could be causing confusion.

The letters sent to newly registered voters says the new federal law “mandates that any person who submits a voter registration form by mail and is registering for the first time in Georgia must provide appropriate identification.” It then lists 10 different forms of acceptable identification.
