Todd and Sarah: ""Chosen Vessels of God." Updated at 2:17 PM
When I read stuff like this I get the shivers. It was just like it was in 2002 and early 2003 here in our little fundamentalist/pentecostal corner of the world. Only then it was another chosen vessel...George W. Bush.

The word then was that George was chosen by God to lead us in our pursuit of terrorists in the Middle East. The churches even gave out yard signs that showed support for the war and support for the president. It did not matter that George chose the wrong country to bomb and invade. God chose him.

We personally had neighbors say this to us, even in our own home. They were asked to leave when they began to yell at us when we disagreed.

Some are now calling Sarah Palin "a present-day Esther".

From Sarah Posner's The FundamentaList:

Vessels of God?

Palin's "Chosen Vessels of God."

Just hours before last week's vice-presidential debate, Stephen Strang, founder of the Charisma publishing giant, highlighted an account by an Ohio pastor who claimed to have had a revelation of Palin as Esther. Pastor Mark Arnold, of Life Covenant Church in Monroe, Ohio, approached Todd and Sarah Palin at a campaign stop in Lebanon, Ohio, and made them cry with his prophecy of Palin as Esther.

Arnold claims that God told him to tell Palin, who encountered him in the rope line, that "God wants you to know that you are a present day Esther!" Palin, Arnold says, immediately began to cry. "The news and nay-sayers and criticizers are going to be very hateful toward you," Arnold continued, "and in the days ahead they are going to turn up the heat ... but do not fear." You are a "present day Esther," Arnold told Palin, and God "has chosen you to reign." Then Arnold made Todd Palin cry, too, and McCain shook his hand and gave him a "deep look of understanding." Sure.

"When I got to my car I sat there for quite a long time," Arnold concluded, "knowing the GOD of the Universe had just used me to deliver a message confirming to Sarah and Todd to realize they are truly chosen vessels of God."

More from the pastor's oomments to Todd and Sarah Palin.

The Strang Report

To Sarah:

It was at this moment Sarah Palin reached out for me to help her up, and as I was assisting her to stand, I was now face-to-face with her, and God said, “Open up your mouth and I will fill it.”

Here is what came out:

“God wants you to know that you are a present-day Esther!”

(She immediately began to cry!)

“God wants to tell you that you are chosen for such a time as this!”

“You are called, and chosen to be a leader"

And the words to Todd Palin:

Her husband, Todd, came over, and I told him what I told her. He began to cry.

I emphasized the fact that he was to guard her at this time … and know that “she is God-called and God-anointed.”

“This is a God-thing and your wife is a present-day Esther ... she is for God to use at this time ... she is an Esther ... she is an Esther ... she is an Esther.”

“You will be hated … but stand strong … God has called both of you to stand!”

It is even more chilling now in 2008 than it was in 2002 and 2003. Guard her? What a strange statement. She is the one who is practically inciting to riot when she speaks.

The "chosen ones" idea has just gone way too far, and it is just plain scary.

36. "anything goes"
Yes, and it goes even further than that. Those who thwart the will of God are either witting or unwitting instruments of Satan. What constitutes an attempt to thwart God's will in this case could have a rather broad definition. Like maybe supporting Obama.

If there was, I would not want to live on his stupid little planet with all of these terrifyingly delusional humans.

Luckily, the universe is so much weirder, beautiful and more interesting than these deludoids understand. That's how I manage to be able to live among them. They are just so clueless as to be laughable. Well... if they weren't so frightening sometimes. Luckily, I believe they are on their way out...

12. Religion...ain't it a beautiful thing?
A true believer can twist their personal ambitions and megalomania into "God's will" anytime they want, and sadly, there are plenty of people willing to help them do it. Bill Maher is absolutely right - its a delusion...and we know what happens when delusional people, like George Bush and Sarah Palin, have power.

Frightening.

13. The obvious argument against people like Chimpy and Moosealini being "God annointed"
Why would God choose such FUCKING IDIOTS to do His will on Earth?

You look at your typical Biblical figures.... Abraham....Moses....David....Esther..... pretty much any of the famous ones, and while they had their flaws, none of them were complete IDIOTS. 16. Every time I see a post like this, I just think.. wow, Wright is totally normal
He might have said a few things that got totally blown out of proportion... but at least he's not running around the country screaming "OBAMA IS THE ONE.. PRAISE JESUS... HE'LL BE OUR SAVIOUR". Nope.. he's not doing that at all.. because if he DID, well, we know what conservatives would say to that.

However, if a few white preachers say it about Sarah.. well then by golly - put a check next to her name, it's GOD'S WILL.

23. Palin thinks "her faith is a substitute for knowledge, education, and experience,"Updated at 2:17 PM
More from Posner's FundamentaList:

"I still don't know exactly what she thinks of Muthee or casting out witchcraft. But I've seen enough evidence from the avalanche of news that she knows absolutely nothing about geopolitics, domestic politics, law, or history. From the Gibson interview to the Couric interview, from the news that many evangelicals, charismatic and otherwise, believe that she is anointed, and from her clearly expressed views about performing God's will in politics, I can add it all up. She thinks her faith is a substitute for knowledge, education, and experience, and that it's okay because she's performing God's will and fighting the forces of evil."

Can't say much more than the title. Sarah, miss, intelligence is not given to you by God. I believe in God and fighting evil too, but you do realize that religion is the judging of the word of God BY MAN. Which means that entire load is nothing more than just you running your mouth about how God has chosen you, when the reality is that man chose you to work with John McCain. It's as simple as that. God won't save you on Earth. Even most religious people realize that, ma'am.

28. Esther story is borrowed from mythology of Ishtar, the Babylonian goddess
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishtar

Ishtar is a goddess of fertility, love, and war.<1> In the Babylonian pantheon, she "was the divine personification of the planet Venus".<2>

Ishtar was above all associated with sexuality: her cult involved sacred prostitution; her holy city Erech was called the "town of the sacred courtesans"; and she herself was the "courtesan of the gods".<2> Ishtar had many lovers; however, as Guirand notes,

woe to him whom Ishtar had honoured! The fickle goddess treated her passing lovers cruelly, and the unhappy wretches usually paid dearly for the favours heaped on them. Animals, enslaved by love, lost their native vigour: they fell into traps laid by men or were domesticated by them. 'Thou has loved the lion, mighty in strength', says the hero Gilgamesh to Ishtar, 'and thou hast dug for him seven and seven pits! Thou hast loved the steed, proud in battle, and destined him for the halter, the goad and the whip.'

Even for the gods Ishtar's love was fatal. In her youth the goddess had loved Tammuz, god of the harvest, and — if one is to believe Gilgamesh — this love caused the death of Tammuz.<2>

Ishtar was the daughter of Sin or Anu.<2> She was particularly worshiped at Nineveh and Arbela (Erbil).<2>

Book by Acharya S "The Christ Conspiracy, The Greatest Story Ever Sold". Author Acharya S is archaeologist, historian, mythologist, and linguist. She studied Bible in original language of Hebrew and Greek. I belong to her group.

".....Book of Esther is, however, not historical, as "Esther" is a remake of the Goddess and Queen of Heaven Ishtar..."

"...even the Bible story admits that Esther-Ishtar was not the real name of the Elamite-Jewish queen. Her real name was Hadassah. (Esther 2 :7)"

31. I think God really meant
"ester"

Esters are a class of chemical compounds and functional groups. Esters consist of an inorganic or organic acid in which at least one -OH (hydroxyl) group is replaced by an -O-alkyl (alkoxy) group. Some acids that are commonly esterified are carboxylic acids, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and boric acid. Volatile esters, particularly carboxylate esters, often have a pleasant smell and are found in perfumes, essential oils, and pheromones, and give many fruits their scent. Ethyl acetate and methyl acetate are important solvents; fatty acid esters form fat and lipids; phosphoesters form the backbone of DNA molecules; and polyesters are important plastics. Cyclic esters are called lactones. The name "ester" is derived from the German Essig-Äther (literally: vinegar ether), an old name for ethyl acetate. Esters can be synthesized in a condensation reaction between an acid and an alcohol in a reaction known as esterification.

That sounds more like Moosegutter Sally.

Because there are nuts out there that claim the mantle

That's like saying all Americans are crazy right wingers
because of Bush/Palin/McCain.

Or all women are blatant creeps because SArah Palin and Cindy McCain are creeps.
This is bullshit.

You don't know what we progressive Christians are doing out here,
because we're doing what we're supposed to be doing:
feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, taking care of the dying,
and helping those displaced by disasters.

Why do all progressives have to be athiests?
There are many of us who aren't mouthbreathing literalists,
but can read the bible, and know what it really means..

Stop condemning good folks who are living the progressive agenda!

And not all Christians are ignorant fools...
in my family, there are 8 advanced degrees among 3 adults...
speak various languages, and have traveled extensively.

Be careful with your condemnations.

The very fact that I referred to "moderate Christians" proves that I know not all Christians are fucking nutjobs.

I said "if" you aren't fighting the whacko Christians, you're part of the problem, and I stand by that. If you let a bunch of fucking moron fundies define what it means to be a Christian, you are partly to blame for your own mischaracterization.

I'm not saying you can't believe whatever the fuck you want to, only that you should do your part to discredit the insane among your ranks, because it will mean a whole fuck of a lot more coming from other Christians than it will from me.

AS to discrediting the insane? Try to discredit those hard line right wingers,
they think I'm crazy too.

I'm not defined by the fundies, but sadly too many progressives lump
all christians as alike-
that we're all literalists, fundies, and speak in tongues. And that offends me.
I don't think all progressives are alike.

YOu said that if moderate Christians
aren't fighting the wackos, we're just as guilty.
How do you know how I live?

LIke many others, I have to make a living, but I can change one life at a time.
Why don't you come and follow me around for a week.
I'm one of those crazy women preachers in an urban church.
(Right there should be a clue: many of my male colleagues see me
as unfit for the calling... but I digress)
Every day I'm face to face with those people who have struggled
with the downturn of the economy,
many who've been denied their pensions when Bethlehem steel bottomed out.
Many of those who are illegal immigrants,
many abused by others, many denied any kind of care at all.
Yeah, I work with many of the 'invisible' people that the
mainstream ignores and denies.

And as someone said: you change more lives with love
than with confrontation.

89. There really aren't that many opportunities.
Most of the fundagelical's hang out in their own, suburban and small town mega-churches. Or they go to something like Paster Bob's outback congregation, built to resemble a barn, where they are taught that Patriotism (American Exceptionalism) and God's Plan are one and the same thing.

Most progressive Christian's tend to be members of mainline denominations, or at least belong to congregations that reflect their own beliefs.

If some prophecy does not come to pass, it is the Devil's doing, or it is God's will that things don't go the prophets way. Which is an odd kind of logic.

In the first excuse they are claiming that the Devil can override a Godly prediction, and the latter reason means that God has decided that he changed his mind at the last minute which raises doubts about the Christian claim that God has already preordained all events. As well it says that after God apparently "spoke" to some bible thumper and told him one thing, He then sees no problem with backstabbing one of his own and doing the opposite.

But still they are never wrong. They refuse to think about these kinds of logistics. Remember Hal Lindsey and "The Late Great Planet Earth"? Came out in the 70's predicting the Second Coming would happen in the 80's or something like that. For fundies, we are perpetually in the 'end times'. So the more war, famine, disease, climate change etc.. the happier they are.

I grew up in such a house, I know what I am talking about.

67. Good Grief
"It was at this moment Sarah Palin reached out for me to help her up, and as I was assisting her to stand, I was now face-to-face with her, and God said, “Open up your mouth and I will fill it.”

Here is what came out:

“God wants you to know that you are a present-day Esther!”

(She immediately began to cry!)

“God wants to tell you that you are chosen for such a time as this!”

“You are called, and chosen to be a leader"

Good grief, way to stroke an ego already bigger than her state.

The Christian righties. As stupid as ever, it seems, even when a black man with "Hussein" for a middle name is about to become President. They just don't get the message very quick, do they?

70. Mind a different point of view on this scary nonsense?
(taking political hat off and putting on mystic hat)

One aspect of my life that I don't usually consider suitable for internet discussion is that I'm a mystic (and indeed, have students). One of the things understood by every established mystical lineage, regardless of religion, is that "mystical insight" can be extremely deceptive.

There's a lot of utter trash, even dangerous trash, that will cross through a human's mind when he or she is engaged in religious practice. Such delusions have led to such craziness as the Children's Crusade, more than a few destructive cults, a heaping helping of religious wars, as well as who knows how many acts of individual self-destruction. It's essential that anything appearing to be divine insight be very carefully examined. One method is, simply, reason. if the insight is something that is testable in the material world -- essentially, if you can apply science to it -- and it flunks the test, it's nonsense.

Another method is to look at whether it furthers an individual's ego, or whether it's about transcending ego. The real thing does not leave its recipient in awe at how important he or she is: it leaves the recipient in awe of the ultimate, and so certain he or she is not special that he or she is unlikely to speak of it, and if it is spoken about, he or she will resist using the word "I" (as in "I experienced" "I saw", etc -- because "I" has nothing to do with it). Think about it: if you were in the presence of the ultimate force of the Universe (theists may insert the deity of their choice, atheists the LHC ;)), would you be running around afterward talking about how wonderful you were?

The problem with Pentecostalism and the various Charismatic movements is that they are chock full of attempted mysticism (i.e., seeking direct experience of the divine) with virtually no understanding of the required discipline and nothing in place to prevent self-delusion. They reject science and reason, so that's out. And they are very comfortable indeed with "center of the universe" type claims, such as made by Rev. Arnold, and they fail to apply other methods of evaluating apparent insight. I have little doubt that there are very sincere Pentecostals; I don't even rule out that among them are a few people who've resisted self-delusion. But overall they look very deluded to me, recklessly so, and I don't say that often about another religion.

(removing mystic hat and putting political hat back on)

I haven't thought about this issue in that exact way before... You explained the hows and whys of the dangers very very well. Not to mention, I appreciate your complete non-judgemental tone. Yours is one of the most concise and well thought out descriptions of the problem in many churches/religions I have found. Fantastic insight! You have given me much to ponder.. Thanks!

75. She can't be. Esther was "respectful and humble"
According to the site I look at, Palin couldn't possibly be the new Esther:

"She shows us that remaining respectful and humble even in difficult if not humanly impossible circumstances often set us up to be the vessel of untold blessing for both ourselves and others. We would do well to emulate her godly attitudes in our difficult positions. Not once is there a complaint or bad attitude exposed in the writing."

78. I am a Christian and when I read such things, it scares me to death...
I have found very little that I would consider apparently Christian about Sarah Palin.
A Godly person would not incite hatred and violence against another human being.
She openly and publicly lies about her opponents to get elected.
She put her family (her children) last in her pursuit of power. Which for a Christian
or any one else with a bit of integrity is considered a really bad thing.
Her child, that is pregnant, not only had to tell her parents of her plight, she was
forced to let the whole world into her trouble. How very traumatic for kid. I can't imagine putting my child
through such public humiliations as that. AND dragging those poor little kids
all over the place while she plays power pig.
The females that have ran for President in the past have atleast waited til their
children were grown to run for office.
This isn't like she just a typical working mom. This was life altering for 5 kids.
Call me wrong...But as a Mother...My kids would have came first.

96. A Real Threat
What makes the Palins a real threat is that they actually believe this nonsense. They must be defeated at all cost and the Republican Party that has been hijacked by the Christian Nitwit Fundamentalists must be either totally reinvented or destroyed. They are the foremost threat to the Republic, far overshadowing any Islamic threat, since they are determined to rewrite the Constitution and transform our government into a theocracy.

98. Remember that they want your tax dollars to indoctrinate their brats
Know as vouchers, it is just a Trojan Horse to use our tax dollars to fund their indoctrination mills. Sarah Palin is a perfect example of how a young mind can be destroyed. As Hitler observed give me your child until he is twelve and he will be mine for life. Out of curiosity I attended two Pentecostal services. It was truly an amazing event. I do believe that many of their members are deranged, babbling on in a totally incoherent manner as if they were having some kind of fit. One minister explained to me that only those who have spoken in tongues or those that have been blessed to interpret them can be saved upon the Second Coming which would most likely occur in his lifetime. All others are condemned to Hell for all eternity. I shudder to think that these people have actually gained power and like Bush firmly believe that they are carrying out God's will. This same minister said we have been commanded by Jesus that "thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven" and therefore it is our duty to establish a Christian government governed by Christians for Christians.
