Are the frantic attacks by Palin/McCain really about the AK Legislature troopergate report?
Isn't it soon to be released? If the AK SC doesn't quash the report, I think it's due out within a week. Perhaps the McCain campaign knows that it will be damaging. I don't question that they're trying to change the conversation from the economy or that they feel that there only chance is painting Obama as an anti-American radical, but I think part of their panic might be related to what's about to be released about Palin.

1. I have not heard a good description of the potential consequences.

Early on a talking head mentioned she could be impeached but not much since then.

2. I think they are...they're meant to blunt the criticism of Palin post-report
by placing it in a context of vicious partisanship.

4. Maybe partly, but the larger reason is to create a political cesspool
The McCain campaign is well aware that Obama has created an atmosphere of highly energized voters who are ready to come out in force for a cause they believe in.

I think that McCain wants to turn both campaigns into a quagmire of attacks and horseshit to turn off voters so that they become completely disgusted with both campaigns, thereby de-energizing the spirited voters who may not have voted had it not been for the Obama campaign of "hope". Less motivated voters from the left coupled with a recently more energized vote from the right (Palin) and he can make it a horse race again is what I believe their thinking is.

5. Planned release date is Friday, but 7 subpeonaed employees now say they will talk.
These employees up until now refused to testify, relying on a suit to quash the legislative investigation. But that suit was dismissed and now these employees have agreed to testify.
