Critics at home and abroad have accused the president of acting unilaterally on foreign policy, in particular taking the pre-emptive step of invading Iraq last March. He sought to answer that complaint, too.

"We have fought the terrorists across the earth not for pride, not for power, but because the lives of our citizens are at stake," Bush was to say.

The Republican incumbent planned to say his administration has tripled funding for homeland security, trained 500,000 emergency workers and is transforming military and intelligence services.

"We are staying on the offensive striking terrorists abroad so we do not have to face them here at home," he was to say. "And we are working to advance liberty in the broader Middle East, because freedom will bring a future of hope, and the peace we all want. And we will prevail."

I heard some Rethug delegates talking about what they wanted to hear tonight. One guy said he wanted to hear about how great it is that the USA is on its own in the war-like having allies is wimpy! Jeez!
