Didn't Chrysler pay the Gov. back after their bailout?
How is this bailout any different from the Chrysler bailout?

1. a) the Chrysler "bailout" was a loan.
b) about $698.5 billion difference.

7. This is not a loan.
We are buying assets. The assets have a value based on how many mortgagors (borrowers) make their payments. If RE stabilizes, some estimates are 75 cents on the dollar. If it doesn't . . . who knows?

The banks could sell these assets in open markets at around 20 cents on the dollar today.

I am guessing they will want 40 cents from us.

6. to be fair, it was 20 years ago, too. and yes they paid it back. the govt made a profit

In 1983, Chrysler paid off the loans that had been guaranteed by US taxpayers. The Treasury was also $350 million richer.

2. Just my opinion...
Considering it was just a Chrysler bailout i figure it is in Chryslers best interest to pay it back or go under...While in this bank bailout deal of 2008 it involves an entire industry with a lot more money at stake...and since it includes many companies under this umbrella what is stopping them from taking the money, and running up the debt again to get back to the same situation asking for more of a hand out....its not like the government wouldnt give it to them "again" or risk having many close down and serious consequences on entire economy (bigger than Chrysler: employees at one company lose their jobs). For me, i figure this 2008 bailout can be held hostage for more money....Chrysler didnt have such an option

8. And I doubt there is ONE person either on Wall St. or in Wash DC
who are as honest and have as much integrity as Lee Iaccoca has.
