Should the DEMs Create a Bailout Bill
That has all the bells and whistles that Dems like
and completely forget about making it bipartisan?

Add rewriting the Mortgages in bankruptcy so people can keep their house

Include a "stimulus" package for Main st.

Kick Paulson out of the deal all together

Force the banks to open their books before they get a dime.

They set the price for what the bad assets is worth, not let Wallstreet jack the prices up

And not allow any CEO Compensation whatsoever.

1. That Might be an Idea
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 06:18 PM by ribofunk
except that I doubt there's an agreement that would satisfy every Democrat. Too many are on the side of the ideological Republicans.

2. I'm thinking that they should. also just give out $80 billion at a time
It might be the real chance to get a good bill through the house but
I don't know if it would pass the Senate if it had more progressives things in it.

4.  blame total failure on repubs & offer a truely progessive revamp & ride it into glory in the
upcomng elections: nothing short of a complete re-regulation of wall street and the banking industry as defined in public by Obama.

meme - Democrats will save America from economic disaster caused by the McCain republicans.

Working with republicans is a disaster - worth a try why bother to give repubs ANY credit at all?

5. People say they hate this "bail out", but after today, I think they'll know it's necessary
I think I agree, it's time for the Dems to say, it's time to stop F*cking around and just do this thing.

8. Absolutely, but it has to work...(which means our Congressional idiots have to get an expert or two)
Come up with a plan that works, INSURE that it has the votes to pass (that's a hint for you, Nancy) and take credit for it all.

10. Could such a bill actually pass?
The Democratic majority in the House is only about 35 seats out of 435, and a large contingent of Democrats are moderate-conservative.

In the Senate we only have 50 out of 100 (including Sanders but not Lieberman). Again, some of them (e.g., Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu) are actually rather conservative.

Without Republicans on board, I don't think the bailout can go through.

12. They have to
Something needs to be done, and they need a good plan (or at least an outline) out quickly before the Republicans start owning the news cycle with their plan of deregulation and tax cuts for the wealthy.

14. Yes. They can say that they tried to work with the Republicans.
But since the Repubs were acting like 3 year-olds having a tantrum, the adults in Congress will step up to the plate, craft a bill that has protections for the average American and Wall Street accountability.

Screw the Republicans. Whatever the Dems pass in the House, the Senate will approve. And George Bush will sign it because he has no choice. He's the one who said we were on the brink of another Great Depression.

Democrats can then take credit for saving the economy while helping out those who need help the most.

17. YES
They should pass their own bill, fully incorporating all of Obama's suggestions, and then dare Bush to veto it!

I really think the Republicans have the most to lose here. Fuck bipartisanship. We already tried that and got stabbed in the back!

19. I'm for any "buy-in" that pays us back in 5-15 years.
However, I know nothing about this stuff. It's too big for my brain and I venture that I'm one of the few who admits it.

Making a decision based strictly on ideology right now is dangerous.
