Talkingpointsmemo's Josh Marshall: Did the Republicans try to pull a fast one at the last moment?
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 12:57 PM by flpoljunkie
Huh?

We're still trying to get a read here on what just happened in the House? Did the Republicans try to pull a fast one at the last moment? Trying to dump this on the Dems?

1. Of course, 94 Democrats voted No, as well.

5. I'm glad they did.
The majority of votes for this bill should come from the party that is most responsible for this mess. It's the only way this country is going to get right in the end is to make the Republicans clean up their own mess instead of posturing for another election. They've been selling snake oil and now it's time for them to have a big old swig of it in front of the people they been gyping for all these years.

10. Now Boehner and Blunt are blaming Nancy Pelosi for the failure for the bill to pass!
Say she was too 'partisan!'

12. Awwww poor babies.
Their feelings were hurt. Not! The lousey SOB's are on the hot seat now and looking for someone to keep them company.

There may not be any way for a bill to pass now without a majority of GOP reps voting for it.

2. That would be my guess--another brilliant plan engineered by John McCain.

4. Both presidential candidates reluctantly supported this bill.
Liberal Democrats were said to be unhappy that judges were not allowed to rewrite mortgages--which would really help those on Main Street. I tend to agree with them. The New York Times wrote an editorial advocating this measure--yet it was a total no go with Republicans, as well as Wall Street mortgage brokers, of course.

3. Of course they did. That was the plan all along.
Let the Democrats pass the unpopular bailout, then watch as the economy tanks anyway, and sail easily to a Presidential victory and retake Congress.

7. People on DU have been predicting they would do it for days!
If Pelosi didn't see that coming after the last 8 years of Bush tricks, she should step down because she is a liability to the Democratic party.

She needed to have a majority of the Republican on the record and on paper agreeing to support the bill before she brought it up for a vote.

8. It wasn't a fast one. The Republicans have been urging their members to vote nay for the past week.

13. So basically, they're admitting that their positions are only based on
what Nancy Pelosi says in a speech?

And this is the party that should be in the White House?
