McCain is headed to Iowa today. Why? One would think he would
head to Florida or North Carolina to shore up his votes. Or Indiana? He is not popular in Iowa and unlikely to win there. Not sure why he would not focus on the states that are closer...

12. You reminded me of a question I had arising from his comments on that.
WHY in God's name would he oppose Ethanol subsidies? This is not a topic I am too familiar with but I know that there are a million different kind of subsidies for farmers - why would he oppose that one?? - especially considering the potential positives it could bring to the energy sector?

I just took it for granted that Ethanol subsidies was something everyone was supportive of. Serves me right to assume anything I guess...

15. Corn ethanol is not viable.
The yield per acre doesn't make sense. The farmers & politicians know this, but (mostly the large corporate farms)went on with the subsidies anyways. McCain was actually being honest, but he didn't frame it well. There are other plant-based fuel options that make more sense (algae!), though Joe Biden's the only one I've heard talking about them.

8. Yes that is strange...
He was just here with Palin about 10 days ago.

He's trailing by more than 10 points here.

My first guess is that he thinks he can steal the state. However, we have a very Progressive governor
who used to be our Secretary of State. He was running around the streets of Iowa, on election night, trying
to secure more voting machines--when the Republicans tried to repress the vote in Ames, Iowa--a very liberal
college town.

I'm sure our Gov understands their game and has countermeasures in place.

I have no idea why McCain is here. Ten points behind...doesn't make sense. Our state does have a large
population of senior citizens. I think we're the "oldest state" in the nation. Maybe he thinks he
can hoodwink the seniors here.

17. It's an invite only event
Not only is he wasting time in deep blue Iowa, McCain's event is an invitation only event for 200 or fewer people at a local construction company. So, he probably will not even get much local media coverage out of the event since it will not be a public rally.

I really do not understand why he continues to dump money into Iowa for local offices and endless TV commercials. Perhaps it is desperation.

18. No, it doesn't make sense.
But it's one of those puzzles that, if you could solve it, would teach you something valuable.

The Republican Party in Iowa doesn't particularly care for him.
He doesn't have critical donors in the state, least of all a concrete company. A pitch for blue-collar votes?

"McCain will stump Tuesday in Des Moines"

At the end of the article:
"Frankly, I think that the people up on the Hill deserve great credit that conducted these negotiations," McCain said on ABC's "This Week."
