The John McCain camp is dead if the economy continues to deteriote at the same rapid speed it has over the past two weeks. Worse, based on stories in the Washington Post and Politico, John McCain almost singlehandedly screwed things up by trying to swoop in on Thursday with that little stunt of his, then refusing to stand up to the House Republicans by telling them he would back the bailout when Obama asked him point blank in the White House whether or not McCain supported the deal. McCain kept silent, then everything fell apart, and word is leaking out about John McCain's personal role in screwing things up for a political stunt.
So, what can the Republicans do to save McCain's shot for the Presidency? They can pass the bailout to avert the immediate crisis, and pray that the fanancial sector does not continue to meltdown. If the economy slows its deterioration, then McCain has a chance to try to distract the voters once again with non-issues like Paris Hilton ads and lipstick. Heck, perhaps even have a State wedding for Palin's daughter. In other words, if people are fearing that we are about to slide into depression, people are not going to care about McCain's next stunt.
However, if McCain can at least slow the decline so that it is a glide in a recesssion, rather than a crash, than McCain and Rove can continue their brand of bullshit politics and turn the election into a contest of who you would rather have a beer with or shag?
So, ironically, while McCain initially tried to hold up a deal so that he could swoop into DC, and take credit for the deal in a White House photo-op, which lead to McCain screwing up the deal, now McCain needs to clean up the mess he created so that he has a chance of winning, or voters will be too worried about their financial livelihood to be concerned with McCain's superficial attacks.
