Tweety on Obama: "[D]id it surprise you that he was so un-ethnic tonight?"
Matthews on Obama's debate performance: "id it surprise you that he was so un-ethnic tonight?"

Summary: On MSNBC, Chris Matthews asserted that "we don't know who won this debate 'til we know how, to put it bluntly, the white working class guy, the regular working stiff out there, responds." He later asked Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson: "id it surprise you that he was so un-ethnic tonight?"

During MSNBC's post-presidential debate coverage, host Chris Matthews asserted that "we don't know who won this debate 'til we know how, to put it bluntly, the white working class guy, the regular working stiff out there, responds." He later asked Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson: "id it surprise you that he was so un-ethnic tonight? That he never once talked about the condition of African-Americans in this country, never once talked about poor people, never once mentioned poor people, never once talked about the underclass."

he can never win with these clowns ,he just keeps smiling and moving ahead

28. Thanks for the extended quote; and what did McBush mention?
From what I gathered from this, nothing about the middle-class.

36. I canvassed 20 houses.
18 are supporting Obama after being on the fence. Last nights debate sold them. They are now strong Obama supporters--calling their families in other states and proudly announcing that fact.

19. Chris Matthews reveals himself as a racist repeatedly like that.
Like Bill O'Reilly, his perceptions of black people are based upon long held ignorant beliefs. sdk

It's embarrassing to watch him talk about race.

23. In defense of Tweety don't think he is racist but he is preoccupied with race
i actually think he is concerned that racism will cause Obama's defeat. I have a pretty good racist-dar, but just don't see it in Tweety at least not any more than the average white. Maybe a bit less so.

33. Tweety is doing Obama a favor here by speaking to a certain subset of

the white working class voter.

It sounds racist (because it is) but Tweety is simply speaking code for "THIS black guy" is okay. He's one of us. It sounds kind of stupid, but I can think of many working class whites who this statement would comfort. The folks who are uncomfortable with anyone who is not like them. Some are racists and some aren't out and out racists. Most are decent people, but have no interaction with anyone outside of their own cultural group so they just don't know if they can trust people not like them to work on their behalf. This is the fear that the Republican exploit in every single election because it works with this group.

Obama made some of these people trust him last night. That's a good thing.

I dated a guy once who I found out was one of the biggest racists I've ever known. It's a big part of the reason we broke up. But anyway, he was one of those guys who blamed N*grs for everything. He was a big Reagan guy, 'cause Reagan was a real man's man.

One night we went to the American Legion and I became anxious when a black man went into the men's room while he was in there. They were in there for about 20 minutes and I was becoming absolutely horrified about what might be going on. Soon they came out with their arms wrapped around each other's shoulders and laughing their butts off. I was stunned. When I asked him about it he said, "oh, he's one of the good ones. He's one of us."

This racist would have voted for Obama. And this is who Tweety is speaking to here.

And why oh why is the "white working class guy" so fucking important? There ARE other groups of people in this country.

37. That's why I sometimes can't stand him. I switched away while he was on last night.
He was blathering about no one talking about the bailout, even though Obama had talked about it quite specifically, including conditions for its passage.

I could tell he was working extra hard to prop up McCrabby, so I just turned away.

And he was tossing around all of that white working class this and that and pretending that somehow a mummified multimillionaire with $520 shoes and too many homes to count, could better relate to this much vaunted group than a former community organizer.

Sometimes Tweety sounds like he belongs with the RNC -- Country Club First !
