2. There were an aweful lot of calls from TX today. At one time 3 or 4 in a row and
for the most part none that I recall really slammed Obama which one might expect from a red state.

33. We Texans are not ALL "Red" necks
I happen to be very liberal Texan. Although my county was one of the biggest winning percentages in any US county by population 1 million+ who voted for Bush.

However, we are correcting our past sins and will turn Tarrant County BLUE. The Tarrant Obama has rgistered 40,000 voters. And we still have until Oct. 6th to register voters.

If they ALL vote for Obama then WE will turn Tarrant BLUE.

Texas is working extremely hard to GOTV for Obama.

40. Good luck w/Tarrant County - I used to live there (Arlington) but am back in Hays
(where I grew up)... moved back to take care of my mother until she passed away last year. I know Travis will go Obama, but I hope Hays does too, even though I doubt we have much of a chance of winning the state.

I think the problem with Tarrant is the people just don't get out and vote:cry:

Hopefully Obama will help change that anomaly.

46. What part of Tarrant did you grow up in?.?.?
I lived on the Eastside all my life. After graduation my parents moved south Tarrant County. However, I didn't live with them at the time.

I hope you can make it back here as well, although that depends where you are now.

Keep me posted if you make it back:hi:

4. Wow. I agree.
For the fundies, this was a game-changer. Obama was perfect in who he was, and perfect in what he was not:
1. Shrill/angry black male
2. Unintelligent/inarticulate black male

Plus, Obama wasn't taking shit from no one.

My firm did polling about Powell in late '95 and he could have easily been elected Prez....
he just couldn't have gotten through the Republican primaries as he was pro-Affirmative Action and pro-Gun control.

18. My brother the Rush fan agreed
He worked in central NC, deep, deep in fundie territory, and the Republican good old boys he worked with all thought Powell was great, and would have voted for him.

They looked at him as a General, not a black General.

Which is progress, I guess.

22. Yes, this is why the military experience actually breeds some progressiveism...
among people.

People in the military have dealth with black Americans as equals and have taken orders from them.

Hell, when I was growing up the sub force was lilly white. Now, the head of subs Atlantic has been a black admiral - Bruce Grooms. And he has also been head of the Naval Academy. There have been several black admirals in the navy and sub skippers too. It's interesting, you're now starting to get Asian and Indian-descent sub skippers!

Between that and voting for Doug Wilder as Gov. of VA. Voting for a black man just isn't that big a deal for me as it might be for folks in the middle of the country or who have not been in the military community.

25. The Bradley Effect is 26 years old and was nowhere to be seen in the primaries
Exit polls were off, but ask John Kerry how much stock should be placed in those. To give another example of its irrelevancy, Harold Ford, a good DLC'er by the way, actually finished with a greater percentage of the vote than the final polling indicated he would get.

Time to update your thinking.

14. Remember, Texas has a HUGE amount of military installlations. They have a tendency...
to see black Americans within that lens.

This is why racism in military areas isn't nearly as prevalent or as persistent as areas without the military.

Us folks that live in the military community have a tendency to see black Americans as 'Marines' or 'bubblehads' or whatever, FIRST, then as black, tall, short fat or whatever.

15. It's psychologically impossible to just view him as a "black man" after all this time
Whether someone hates him or not, is racist or not, it's been 4 years since Obama has been on the scene. He's a good man. That is obvious to anyone who takes the time to listen.

But I guess we have to accept the good with the bad in this case. Slowly but surely progress is being made.

28. My father-in-law...
...is a blue-collar union democrat, and I've heard him say more than a few racist things, N-word included. During the primaries he complained an awful lot about both Hillary and Barack, and I was worried he was going to go to the dark side. Saw him a couple weeks ago and he was going on and on about how great Obama was and smacking down McCain like a DUer. It was great to see.
