The real reason behind Zell at the RNC?

Did they just want him so they could have a veteran on stage besides McCain? It seems their party is seriously lacking for anybody who has served in the military, so did Rove have to turn a possibly mentally impaired old coot to drum up another vet for their convention speeches?
