Hillary Clinton's statement on the debate:

"Tonight Barack Obama displayed beyond a doubt that he understands both the gravity of the financial crisis facing America, and the challenges we face in Iraq and around the world. Senator McCain offered only more of the same failed policies of the Bush Administration. America deserves better."

“I stood next to Barack Obama in 22 debates and tonight epitomized why millions are joining me in standing with him and working hard to ensure he is the next President of the United States.”

Looking at things now, I'm glad that Hillary went the distance, and they had so many debates. Barack seemed to learn a lot from them. Things would have been much different if they hadn't gone toe-to-toe for 20 debates.

I may be the only DU'er that such a comment pisses off. Still, I'll recommend common decency over character attacks as a way of separating ourselves from the "dark side".

and made the statement that helps Obama and makes her proud. Not trying to put her down, but her and Bill just need to stop reinforcing the idea that they are friends with mccain, I think we all know that by now, and say what they want to say. As time has gone by, I believe she has really warmed up to Barack and that she is not just doing what she has to do as a democrat. Her heart is in this thing, not just her mind. To me, that is a hugely important realization.

Failin' doesn't hold a candle to Hillary. I would love to see Hillary shred her down to size. It's the difference between night and day: Hillary is the real deal and Failin is window dressing. I was furious when Failin tried to compare herself to HRC.

I am not a Hillary fan, don't hate her but am behind Obama and always have been. My sister is not political and she also is not a Hillary fan, but she said the other day that to compare palin to Hillary was ridiculous. Hillary is intelligent and palin is an airhead. She said that she could not understand how this was the only woman that mccain could find to put on his ticket, surely there was someone more intelligent than her among the republicans. I about cracked up, but didn't want to seem like I was disrespecting her opinion when I completely agreed with her.

It is one of the finest works on the Lincoln Presidency I have read - and I've read a great number of them.

It shows how Lincoln, thought by everyone to be a kind of backwards rube because of his lack of "experience" actually used the rivalries in his own party to build an extremely strong and capable government, consisting entirely of men who thought they could do Lincoln's job better than he could. This wise choice and faith in his own strength and personality made Lincoln the greatest political figure his country would ever produce.

Because we are now leaving a Presidency that rivals those of Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan's as vast disasters, we need another Lincoln or FDR quality Presidency.

I hope that Obama has read this book.

with the possible exception of Chase, all ended up in awe of the President.

Chase excepted, not one of them considered themselves to be smarter than Lincoln.

This was particularly true of Seward and of Stanton.

Stanton had met Lincoln before their time in the cabinet, in a legal case, the McCormick reaper case, and treated Lincoln with almost undisguised contempt.

Lincoln was great enough a man to appoint Stanton Secretary of War anyway after it became necessary to get rid of another rival in the cabinet - one who didn't measure up - in Cameron. Yes Cameron had angled for the Presidency, and yes, Lincoln appointed him.

Stanton, a Democrat and not a Republican - the Republicans were the good guys, liberals, in those days - did a fabulous job as Secretary of War, and Seward a fantastic job at State, particularly with forestalling British and French intervention in the Civil War, which may have lead to dismemberment of the US.

Seward after the war, after recovering from an asassination attempt by the plotters who killed Lincoln, serving in the Johnson adminstration, arranged the purchase of Alaska from Russia.

Palin aside, this proved to be a very good deal for us.

He was valued for his "experience."

He is generally rated as one of the worst Presidents in history, at least until Nixon set a new standard, only, incredibly enough, to be surpassed by Bush for the "worst" title.

Our country is what it is because of Tommy and Jim I, and Jim II, but - I know this is not totally cognizant of the times they lived in - because of the slavery issue I cannot regard them as less than seriously flawed.

It's not like Tommy didn't have insight into the issue either. John I prodded him incessantly on the point and so did the greatest American of the 18th century, Bennie. I think Tommy knew better but had not the courage to act on what he knew to be true.

Jim I's work on the invention of Federalism however was an essential American development.

but the preamble of the Declaration of Independence is one of the finest examples of writing to be found. I will post it here, because more people should read it, and they should pay special attention to the second and last sentences: they spell out what a people should do when their gov't no longer represents them (like now):

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. Elaine Pagels, the religious philosopher and scholar on Christianity made the point that for most of human history and in most cultures the idea that "all men are created equal" was not self-evident, and that worse, it would have been considered absurd. According to Pagels - if I recall correctly it was in her work "The Origins of Satan," the idea of human worth - particularly individual worth - is particularly Christian and therefore only makes perfect sense in a European context. Christianity, she says, was particularly instrumental in bringing down the Roman Empire because it claimed that slaves had as much worth as Emperors. This was a radical idea.

Of course the idea gained some currency in the 20th century, but interestingly only holds water because the West won most of the important wars that were fought.

Jefferson certainly regarded the proposition itself as absurd or else he would not have had slaves. There is no escaping that. It was obvious in his own times too. When informed of Jefferson's text, Samuel Johnson quipped, "How is it that we hear so many yelps about liberty from the drivers of negroes?"

Ben Franklin - who for my mind was the greatest American before Lincoln, heads and shoulders above any of the rest including even Washington - was aware of these contradictions, and fought tirelessly for emancipation and black equality. Franklin was responsible for many American firsts, including the first abolitionist society in the United States. He was very dissatisfied with the Constitution because of its attitude toward slavery, but accepted it as the best document that could be had in those times.

Rhetoric has its place, of course. I think that Lincoln's beautiful locutions during the Civil War, particularly at Gettysburg, were as important as the bullets and cannon shells. Gary Wills did a wonderful job of showing this in his beautiful and elegant exegesis "Lincoln at Gettysburg, The Words that Remade America." Wills' work is tremendous if you love writing, and literary thought. He draws this brilliant connection to Pericles and many others in showing the origins of Lincoln's famous speech. Wills does what few others really manage, to take a walk in Lincoln's mind. Wills makes the point that Lincoln took Jefferson's words more seriously than Jefferson himself did.

I was pleased to see a few copies of his memoir for sale on Amazon for not too much.

Kearns starts the book with the deaths of FDR's mother and Eleanor's brother and you come away thinking, "how nice of FDR to be so sweet to ER after her brother died," but when you read the R's daughter's take on it as related to Littell you realize that FDR was a total shit.

There are also discussions of the legal issues we're dealing with today. It's a good look at FDR's wartime justice dept. We need to rethink that department, don't we?

Thanks for your inquiry, you read as I do. I will admit to prefering Engles over Marx. Engles actually writes with some humor, which surprised me.

It is hard not to feel small when your Mom was Eleanor and your dad was Franklin.

As a family, the Roosevelts may not have been all that much. Eleanor is my favorite Democrat of all time, and I personally weigh her as being much closer to my ideals than Franklin.

Still, I think she loved Franklin faults and all - and she certainly was aware of his faults. I think the case can be made that she used him as much as he used her. Mrs. Roosevelt was no retiring wall flower. She played hard ball, as her cousin Ted found out during the Teapot Dome scandal. She roughed up the Russians pretty well at the UN, and she kicked the Kennedy family where it hurts quite a number of times. (She was still at them when she died in 1962, and was gearing up for a confrontation over Civil Rights.)

Franklin Roosevelt would not have succeeded so admirably at so much without Eleanor. But let's be clear, Eleanor made compromises. She after all, had to sit at dinner with James Eastland and make nice and be polite.

When Franklin kicked Joe Kennedy out of his house, it fell to "poor" Eleanor to deal with it.

But thank you for explaining your reference. I'll keep it in mind.

Doris Kearns, like any historian, cannot incorporate every source, of course. Being a historian is about making judgements about the relative importance of sources, the biases of sources, and their reliability. Sometimes historians get things wrong and later evidence contradicts what they have argued in good faith. (A famous recent case has to do with Neils Bohr and Werner Heisenberg's relationship during the Nazi considerations of nuclear weapons where the excellent historian Thomas Powers has been proved to have been mistaken about Heisenberg's intentions.) I am sure that if you sat with Kearns to discuss your issue with her work, she would be aware of the source and able to discuss her rationale in ignoring it intelligently.

Again, I'll keep what you have said in mind if I read the work, however. Thanks.

104. During the primary, I had thought the number of debates
was excessive. But hindsight is always 20/20 and now I know that Obama couldn't have asked for anyone better to debate than Hillary; all their debates were the best practice anyone could ask for.

Now dont get me wrong, alot of dems are fixed on this election and seeing Hillary come out for Obama is what this party needs...HOWEVER..there are ALOT of people that are watching Bill Clinton and feeling he needs to come out more for Obama. They feel he is not in it for Obama as much as he should and they are waiting for his go ahead deeply sincerely and with passion for Obama. When that happens the floodgates will open and the dems will unify like never before. I am talking about the Reagan Democrats and "Bubba" voters here.
