It has always been a problem for us--for our party, and for our country in general--that Americans seem, by a slim majority, to prefer to vote for the candidate who makes them feel comfortable than the candidate that can do the job. In particular, it has become a liability in presidential politics to be perceived as someone who is smarter than the average voter. The theory is hey, I could do this job if I had to, and so can my beer buddy over here with the folksy idioms and the Texan drawl (or Fargo accent, depending).

On stuff like foreign policy and taxes it's easy enough for people to bullshit themselves into believing they know what they would need to know to fix everything. Foreign policy for most people who aren't in the military is remote enough to become the subject of action-film fantasy and as for taxes, well, it's always the right idea to lower them.

The Impending Financial Apocalypse, hereafter IFA, is a different story. Most people who have jobs and bank accounts know enough to know how badly this could fuck us all. And most of those people also know that they really don't know what to do to fix it. Which means that now, most people are going to come around to the idea that they need someone in charge who is smarter and knows more than they do. Cause a war somewhere way the hell over there is one thing, but one's bank account is quite another.

Whether or not McCain shows up tonight, I think this the change that's going to sink him, and I hope to God it will also bury Palin and her entire wing of the GOP.

Leadership is admitting you don't have the answers, but you know smart people who can help find them. Leadership is taking a risk when it's not politically expedient. Leadershop is calling out the mistakes of the past and being willing to move forward with new ideas.

Barack Obama provides leadership. I take lots of comfort in that.

Folks see a lot of the nonsense but Obama still has to provide comfort and break through the barriers alienating him from MANY people out there still. In the end, most people do not follow all this news and the events. They barely even watch the news.

5. The stock market issue, these financial institutions going under, tighter credit...

it's all hitting the American people HARD and IMO, they're more susceptible to actually LISTENING to what the candidates are saying. Those who choose to continue to drink the kool aid are probably beyond reason. All others are beginning to realize that these last 8 years have ruined this country.
