This could indeed be a trap!!!
All indications are that any bailout will be extremely unpopular with the American public.

Any plan that passes with largely Democratic support will just give McCain an issue to run on!

Hopefully our leadership will not support any plan that the Republican leadership (and McCain) do not also sign off on. Otherwise, the issue WILL be used against us in the upcoming election!

1. McCain can't oppose a bail out after staking his candidacy
on getting one passed.

7. Watch him.
The media is already starting to refer to the proposed agreement as a "democratic" plan!

21. Fine by me.
A reminder of what McCain said:

America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, every corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward. I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective.

No one gets to walk back language like that. No one.

So if McCain is for a Depression and the Dems are not, how does that help McCain?

15. He'll have some excuse for not supporting the final bill,
and try to make it seem like he's looking out for the public interest.

This gives him an opportunity to run against the Democrats AND Bush.

Frankly, I'd be surprised if this is NOT a trap!

16. No - after the fact, they will claim that it was not that they were against a bail out plan -
but they were against THE WRONG one. (and whatever plan is passed will be called the wrong one.) They need to get McCain on record with his plan (yeah I know he's already had 2).

30. The problem is that it is a real problem and the Democrats
need to put together their best plan and not play politics with it. Knowing the Republicans might does not make it right not to try to do the right thing.

The scary thing is that the llast two times something was pushed through at the last minute that was said to be too important to wait - it was the IWR and the torture bill.

I'm not even saying that the OP is correct- I just think all of this "sit down, shut up, stop worrying- the DEM strategists are smarter than you" is pretty funny in light of the past 8 years.

19. Oh. My. God.
Everything's a trap, according to some of us on this board. McCain lost his temper on-air? Trap. Palin sounded like an idiot on TV? Trap! The ENTIRE PRESS CORPS DECLARES JOHN MCCAIN TO BE INSANE AND WEAK FOR HIS INVOLVEMENT IN THE PHONY "BAILOUT"/DEBATE CANCELING and what do we do?

"oooooh, I'm scared this might be a TRAP!!"

Please. Have we forgotten what ass kicking feels like? Have we really gone all the way from "Republicans are incompetent and stupid" (remember those days?) to "Republicans are so fiendishly clever that they control reality itself!!"?

Uh oh, you guys. I just had a terrible thought. What if I'M part of the trap, now, too??!?

26. This is serious.
Remember that it was McCain who in effect turned the bailout into a campaign issue with his stunt yesterday.

You think he did that for no reason at all?

He's already demonstrated that he will do anything to get elected, and doesn't really give a damn about the good of the country . . .

Although it now seems like that if he can't get his way, McCain is willing to derail the whole process, the consequences be dammed!

Just another example of McCain putting his personal ambition before what's good for the country!

But giving Bush $700 billion without almost every Republican in Congress voting for the bill first would be even worse.

No bill should pass without a majority of Republicans (and McCain) voting for it.

Any other scenario would be a 'trap'.
