Boehner Says Deal Not Done
Boehner Says Deal Not Done

The House Republican leader says in a statement: “I am encouraged by the bipartisan progress being made… However, House Republicans have not agreed to any plan at this point.”

“With that in mind, I look forward to joining my colleagues, President Bush, Sen. McCain, and Sen. Obama at the White House later today to take the next critical steps on a rescue package.”

Democrat theory: Boehner is slow-walking so McCain can look heroic.

6. Boehner is known as a "small government" idealogue in Ohio
I think he is very hesitant to waste public money on the "bailout".

12. YES THEY ARE necessary. They broke it. They've gotta sign the bailout.
No Republicans = No Bailout !!

They pushed deregulation which necessitated the bailout, so they need to be on the record supporting it.

They know the bailout is unpopular with the public. Gingrich suggested McSame could hang back and not sign and then push himself as the Reformer, opposing the Democrats and Bush's bailout.

9. Anything that will look like McCain must stay in
Warshington until Saturday and allow him to skip the debate will do for the Republicans. When Obama is on that stage by himself they'll regret it mightily.
