The local republicans in Carroll County NH are getting scared
We are assuming it's the republican representatives who, for the first time in years, have a democrate challenger. Last week in the middle of the night, every single one of her signs were stolen from people's yards and sides of the road, ripped to shreds and dumped on her front lawn.

She's is up against Gene Chandler, biggest thief ever in these parts, but he continues to get voted in. Cops told her she is being targeted because no other democrats signs were touched. It's gonna start getting down and dirty and maybe even dangerous are here.

1. I don't understand
that kind of behavior. Is the feeling that some undecided person will see the signs shredded and decide not to vote for her? It's just stupid. It has to be an intimidation tactic. Stupid, stupid repukes.

2. We convinced her to write a letter to our local paper, which is the town hall
of our community. People need to hear about the viciousness of the other side. They will go to any length to intimidate around here. They are a nasty bunch.

16. Done. $25 Dollars to Syndi for new signs or whatever her campaign needs.
Thanks for the links, graywarrior.

I'd like to challenge others at DU to do the same, stand up against sign thieves, but it seems self-congratulatory to do that.

And your duct-taped duck....

I might just start a thread to see if anyone else would kick in.

If the thieves ever learned that their actions bring in donations, maybe they'd think twice.

3. She needs simply to replace the signs.
And replace them over and over every single time this happens. And do her best to make sure that the local media covers it.

I've run for office and know about signs being trashed. The important thing is to laugh it off, put up new signs, and keep on going. People who do those things are jerks and cowards. Probably bullies also. Stand up to them.

And good luck to her.

20. Maybe, but signs are expensive. In a "red" location, Dems don't usually have big $$$$
in their campaign funds. People are afraid of the consequences of the ruling "reds" if they donate to Democrats.

He and that sheriff who did end up in jail for the crap they pulled. But Chandler never got touched. Amazingly, the entire town of Bartlett supports him. He must be owed lots of favors.

Thought I'd add a visual.

that a bunch of huge Norm Coleman signs went up down most of the roadways in our city. Co-winky-dink? I don't think so. I also have an Obama sign and they didn't touch that which makes this very suspicious.

44. Simple...Republicans are bullies...
...it's just their nature -- they need to show themselves as "strong," and the easiest way to do that is to beat up on someone who they think will be unable or unwilling to fight back.

That's why I once wrote, in a "Modest Proposal" post, that every progressive and Democrat should get a gun and learn how to use it. Republicans are far more likely to treat you with respect if they think you'll "fight back" in a way they would think of themselves.

29. She may have written a letter to the Conway Daily Sun
We were all at a Carol Shea-Porter meet up yesterday when she told us what happened and several people recommended that she write a letter. I will probably see her at the dem office tomorrow at our team leader meeting and I will give her the ling for this. I don't have her email but I will get it tomorrow.

I should note here that we have no proof who trashed her signs, but the cops did say they felt she was being targeted. Everyone came to the conclusion it had to be some republicans who are behind it all.

I didn't realize you knew her. I emailed the county office there ask them to let them know of an effort here to support her. It looks like a few great DUers are helping out.

Please let me know if any of this comes up in conversation, or if any other news develops.

34. I will certainly keep you posted.
This will boost the moral of other dems running in our area, also. We feel isolated and dependant on locals for support and, as you know, the economy here is run on hospitality and retail, so people don't make that much money.

I cannot wait to see Sindy's reaction to this.

27. My father in law lives in Grafton County in Lyman
Lyman is a nice countryish town and I absolutely love the White Mountains when we visit there. Just beautiful, the mountains, the woods, and the people are very nice. Oh course with 3 and 4 year olds we went to Santa's Village, Clark's , and Story Land. There are no property taxes there. Isn't it all done with a sales tax there? The live and free die attitude may work well on the license plates but I think there is a need to get the Rethugs out there and put some Dems in who will do the state some good. Vermont is very liberal and my father in law says no one in NH likes them, kind of a rivalry going on. He is very conservative as well. I guess he is stuck with a liberal as a daughter in law.

30. We have no sales tax or state income tax here.
Property tax is very high in some towns, reasonable in others. We also have ridiculous meals and rooms tax that hits the tourists hard.

35. Okay, its the opposite then. I was trying to remember what Tom (my father in law) told me.
From eating out, it didn't seem horrible but then again I am from CT and everything seems less in comparison. Our gas prices and grocery prices are one of the most expensive in the United States. However, relying on just the property tax seems like a tough burden for some towns. Do you find the schools and other services are lacking? And tourism seems so important to NH, why make it so tough on the tourists? I still can't wait to go back however. We stayed in a little cabin right across from the presidential range of the White Mountains in Randolph. It was so peaceful and beautiful there, lots of woods. Hoped to see a moose but I hear you gotta know where to look. The owner of our motel/cabins found one and took pictures for us.

36. "There are no property taxes there"
Whoa, nelly.

NH has some of the highest property taxes in the country. Worse, there isn't any sort of a homestead exemption. If you're a homeowner on a fixed income, you're basically screwed.

Of course, the current political leadership of both the Democratic and Republican parties are deathly afraid of doing anything to fix the problem. If you suggest that it might make sense to tie taxation to a person's ability to pay, the demagogues crawl out and start screaming "income tax! New Hampshire advantage! booga booga booga!", and that's the end of the discussion.

Sadly, the current Democratic governor is among the worst offenders when it comes to stiffling debate about our dangerously obsolete tax structure.
