PPP New Mexico poll - Obama 53 McCain 42
Raleigh, N.C. – Barack Obama has opened up a large lead in New Mexico, according to
the newest survey from Public Policy Polling.
Obama is at 53% in the state, compared to 42% for John McCain. Key to Obama’s
performance is that he is only running behind 49-47 to McCain among white voters. In a
state with a significant Hispanic population that level of competitiveness with whites will
seal a win. He leads 59-35 with Hispanics.
The state’s US Senate race is looking even less competitive. Tom Udall leads Steve
Pearce 57-37.

PPP seems to have Obama doing better than other pollsters in most polls. But this is the third New Mexico poll after the conventions that shows Obama leading by more than 7 points. I think NM is almost as safe as IA. PPP publish a new Colorado poll tomorrow.

4. IA and NM are pretty solid. Hold the Kerry states and Obama is at 264...five short

McCain would have to pull a Bush 2000 sweep and take all of: NV, CO, IN, MO, OH, FL, VA, NC, WV

In 2000, rather remarkably, Bush swept 14 to beat Gore: those 9 plus TN, KY, AR, AZ and LA which had all voted for Clinton-Gore in 1996 (IN was not competitive then)

6. Sarah Palin is not very popular with New Mexico voters.
While 38% said her selection made them more likely to vote for John McCain, 46% said it made them less likely to do
so. Among independents 47% said her place on the ticket made them less likely to vote
Republican. Overall Barack Obama has a 16 point advantage with that demographic. Joe
Biden is a slight net favorite for the Democrats, with 35% saying his choice makes them
more likely to vote for Obama compared to 32% who say it makes them less likely to do
so.

8. NM
Polls continue to show NM Is huge for Obama. This will not be close In NM as It was In 2000,and 2004.
Nader, and Bush's then popularity with Hispanics made It razor then for Gore In 2004 and enough
Hispanics beening scared by Bush saying Kerry wouldn't keep them safe that allowed Bush to take the
state.

Now if You Ignore PPP you should Ignore RAS as well. There were some times I was told PPP nailed
It duing the primarys(Like In Wisconsion)
